NADA 2015 in San Francisco promises to be jam-packed with incredible keynote speakers, hundreds of great exhibitors, and of course once-in-a-lifetime networking opportunities. It’s no wonder the convention is tabbed as the “automotive industry event of the year.”
And since we’re Bay Area locals, we know that our region has countless opportunities and activities – outside of NADA 2015 – to make your trip even more memorable.
Of course, you’ll want to create an itinerary that fits your needs, so we’ve created eight profiles and listed our favorite local destinations for each one.
Which are you?
Foodie: You’ve heard the term before, and maybe even consider yourself in the category. Dictionary.com defines foodie as “a person keenly interested in food, especially in eating or cooking.” From seafood to steakhouses to Thai food to comfort food, San Francisco has a multitude of options ready to serve you. Bring a hearty appetite and make a reservation in advance where applicable. Bon appétit!
Brew & Vine: No matter if you’re looking for a great lager, world-class vino, or a unique speakeasy – San Francisco is home to Smuggler’s Cove and Trick Dog, voted the 16th and 33rd “World’s Best Bar” respectively. Not to mention Anchor Steam brewing company is headquartered in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. But if a nice glass of vino or whiskey is more your speed - don’t fret – our list has you covered, too. And of course, don’t forget that the City by the Bay is a short 45 minute drive to our world-famous wine country, literally home to hundreds of wineries in the Sonoma and Alexander Valleys. (And always, always, always drink responsibly!)
Caffeine Fiend: Since NADA is packed wall to wall with exhibitors, keynotes, and unique networking opportunities, chances are you’re going to need a little pick me up. San Francisco cafés are some of the best in the world, so take advantage while you’re here. Let’s face it: you can find a Starbucks in almost every city imaginable. But the recommendations on our list are only found in the bay area.
Shoportunist: San Francisco may not have the world-renowned Madison Avenue or Rodeo Drive that New York City and Beverly Hills do, but its shopping options are nothing to scoff at. From the hipster shops of Haight Ashbury, the tourist souvenirs of Fisherman’s Wharf, the eclectic shops of Chestnut Street, and the boutique options of Union Square, San Francisco will have you shopping until you drop. Bring your checkbook; you’re going to need it!
Culture Fanatic: If you’re looking to immerse yourself in different cultures and visit some of the country’s best science exhibits, then you’re in for a San Francisco treat! The Exploratorium, North America’s largest Chinatown outside of Asia, the iconic Palace of Fine Arts are just a few of the stops you can experience. The Academy of Sciences will blow your mind, over and over and over. Add some flavor to your NADA 2015 visit to San Francisco because you won’t regret it!
Sports Nut: For the sports junkie out there, hoops and hockey will be on full display during NADA 2015. “Splash Brothers” Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson highlight a week’s worth of hardwood action for the Golden State Warriors. While veteran Joe Thornton and up-and-coming star Tomas Hertl take center ice for the San Jose Sharks. If you can’t catch a game, consider touring two of North America’s most beautiful and technologically advanced sports venues: ATT Park and Levi’s Stadium. If college sports is more your speed, that’s okay too, as the California Golden Bears and Stanford Cardinal host Pac-12 basketball match ups. Check the schedule and plan ahead to get your sporting fix!
Music Lover: The bay area is home to some completely unique live music venues and stand-up comedy clubs. The Fillmore, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and The Warfield all call San Francisco home. But if the soothing sounds of one of the world’s finest orchestras is more appealing, then there is the San Francisco Symphony to delight your ears and leave you standing in ovation.
Not to be outdone, Cobb’s Comedy Club and The Punch Line are eagerly awaiting your arrival too. In years past, they have featured the Wayans brothers, Dave Chappelle, and Robin Williams. Check the lineup during NADA 2015 and prepare to belly laugh!
Outside Guide: Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, cable car rides and Lombard Street may get most of the attention as far as San Francisco landmarks are concerned, but the Lands End/Sutro Bath houses offer spectacular ocean views and casual hiking trails. Not to mention Twin Peaks offers 360-degree views of the entire bay area. And if you don’t mind a short drive over the Golden Gate, experience Muir Woods in all its glory with thousands of ancient redwood trees and six miles of gorgeous trails. After all, there’s a good reason Muir Woods is a national monument!
Chances are you fit into more than one of these categories. You may be coming to NADA 2015 for business and to network with fellow automotive industry professionals. But there’s no harm in making it a mini vacation of sorts with diverse shopping, multi-cultural exhibits, sporting events, and outside excursions. Whether you’re traveling alone or bringing the family, a first-timer or San Francisco expert, the bay area has something to make your trip a memorable one.
