When 5.25 Million Car Accidents Happen Every Year, How Can You Avoid One?

Even though millions of people are injured in car accidents every year, most collisions are completely avoidable.
Those who drive defensively and properly maintain their vehicles can substantially reduce their risk of being involved in a life-altering accident. Here is a look at a few steps that you can take to avoid a major collision that will negatively impact your health, finances, and future.

Avoid Distractions

All drivers must avoid distractions whenever they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Taking your eyes off of the road for just a few seconds to change the radio station or eat a bite of food will increase your risk of being involved in an accident. Some of the most common distractions include smartphones, tablets, radios, food, beverages, and noisy passengers. All of your attention should be on the road ahead of you until you are in a safe location and the vehicle is completely off.

Give Yourself Extra Time

Leaving for work or school just a few minutes early will give you the opportunity to drive defensively and stay within the speed limit. Those who are running late often make mistakes that put themselves and others in dangers. You also need to plan out your route well before you get into the driver's seat. Familiarizing yourself with the signs and speed limits along your route will help you avoid unnecessary driving mistakes.

Maintain Your Vehicle

In most cases, a driver is responsible for the safety of their vehicle. The only time a driver isn’t responsible for their vehicle is if a manufacturer or mechanic acted negligently. If you were recently involved in an accident because of a faulty or damaged part, then you must immediately contact an auto accident attorney, such as one from the Alexander Law Group. These cases can become extremely complex, and you will need an experienced legal representative by your side.

Never Drive Impaired

Many drivers don't realize that alcohol and illegal drugs aren’t the only substances that impact their coordination and cognitive abilities. There are hundreds of different prescription and over-the-counter medications that can make you drowsy or impair you in some other way. Before taking any medication, you must first read through all of the potential side effects. Most companies are required by law to put warnings on their products if they can potentially impair you.

No matter how careful you try to be, you may be involved in an accident at some point. Even if you don’t feel injured, it is still important to seek out medical attention. Some drivers and passengers don’t notice the physical side effects of collisions for days, and what started off as a minor bruise or strain can quickly evolve into a lifelong injury if it is left untreated.
