Junker in the Driveway? 4 Ideas to Get it Out of Your Hair

Having a junker stranded in your driveway can be a frustrating situation for homeowners. Not only are these vehicles often eyesores, but they can even damage your property with leaking fluids and rotting rubber. Here is a look at four quick and easy ways that car owners can get rid of their junkers.

Sell to a Collector

One of the most common mistakes that car owners make during this process is assuming that the vehicle is worth almost nothing. Even if it is not a classic hot road or muscle car, it might still be worth quite a bit. Many newer vehicles are bought up by collectors who believe they might be worth something in the future. As long as you are not in a rush to sell the vehicle, listing it in an auto trader magazine might be worth your time.

Search for Valuable Parts

Just because the whole car is not worth much does not mean it needs to be sold as scrap metal. Many of the leading car manufacturers use similar or identical parts in different models, and this means a few of the smaller components could be very valuable. Selling off some of the more important parts such as the engine block, drive shaft, or rims could put quite a bit of money in your pocket.

Donate to a School

If you want to make this process as easy and stress-free as possible, then you will most likely want to donate the vehicle. Unlike parting the car out or trying to find a motivated buyer, mechanic schools will pick these vehicles up within just a few days. Some schools, like Newgate School, use these sort of donations for hands-on instruction. Depending on the value of the car and where you live, your donation might even be tax deductible.

Trade it In

While most dealerships will not purchase a completely wrecked vehicle, they might take your old junker as a trade-in for a new vehicle. In many areas, dealers will count an older junker toward a new vehicle as long as the engine turns over. You will also need to make sure that the vehicle is legally in your name before trading it in.

Whatever you decide to do with your vehicle, you should always check on the laws in your state to determine how the property must be transferred. Selling or donating old cars and trucks can be a complicated process for those who have never done it before, and handing over the vehicle without the proper paperwork is generally illegal.
