How to Increase Your Car's Lifespan

You can potentially save yourself a lot of time, stress and money by finding ways to prolong the life of your car. By taking good care of your vehicle, you’ll have a more reliable mode of transportation for the long term and can put off having to buy a new vehicle. Follow these four tips to help increase your car’s lifespan.

Store Your Car in a Garage

Keeping your car parked in a garage while at home or work is a great way to protect its exterior from the elements. Rain, hail and high winds can damage the paint, leave dents and cause cracks in the windows and windshield. Intense sunlight can also be damaging to vehicles and fade the color on your seats and in other areas of the interior. Parking a car inside a garage is also good for preserving the condition of the oil, coolant and other car fluids. Extreme heat and cold weather can cause damage to these fluids and result in the need to replace them more often, which most people don’t anyway. As these are essential to the preservation of your car’s interior, leaving your car in an insulated garage can do a lot for the longevity of the vehicle.

Go in for Regular Oil Changes

If you don’t have your oil changed in a timely manner on a regular basis, sludge could build up in the engine and ruin your vehicle. For many years, auto experts recommended getting oil changes every six months or after every 3,000 miles of driving. However, that myth has long been debunked as a marketing trick, and in reality, your vehicle can likely go for 10,000-15,000 miles between oil changes. Check with your car’s manufacturer to learn how often you should have your oil changed. You can also lengthen the period between changes by getting higher quality oil.

Have Regular Transmission Maintenance Work Performed

Most auto manufacturers set maintenance schedules that should be followed. However, most manufacturers recommend having the transmission fluid and filter changed every 15,000 miles. Technicians at Huntington Beach Transmissions or another service shop in your area can also check the status of your transmission to diagnose any problems that may hinder its performance. If you aren’t sure when to run maintenance, you can also have transmissions checks done twice a year with oil changes and other maintenance to keep your vehicle in top shape.

Drive with Care

Revving your engine, changing speeds excessively or driving your vehicle roughly in other ways can diminish your car’s lifespan faster. It’s best to try to maintain as consistent of a speed as possible while driving. It’s especially important to be gentler with your vehicle when the weather is cold or you’re just starting up your car for the day. If your car has been sitting for several hours without being driven, you should let it warm up for a bit before you drive after starting your engine so that the vehicle’s fluids can get warmer and function better. You should also try to accelerate more gradually when possible, rather than gunning the engine and putting strain on the internal mechanisms.

Maintaining the life of your car is possible if you’re mindful of the important details. You should avoid delaying any maintenance or repair work that needs to be done on your vehicle if you want to keep driving longer. The better you take care of your car, the more money you’ll save in repairs and the longer you’ll go before having to replace it.
