How Smart is it to Drive a Smart Car?

If you live in a bustling metropolis, then you understand the challenges of parking in tight spaces. Smart vehicles are safer for the environment, and you do not need a wide space to park. Fuel costs are lower, and the vehicles are quick to maneuver through traffic. Plus, smart cars are so light even a little horsepower goes a long way.

Fuel savings

Saving money on gasoline and helping the environment are two of the biggest advantages people say draws them to Smart vehicles. Truthfully, smart cars average similar fuel prices to mid-size and small gasoline vehicles. While the cars themselves are smaller and lighter, their miles-per-gallon is comparable to any other car. This means that the engine isn’t as fuel efficient in a Smart car as in other cars. The exception to this is the electric Smart cars, which are twice as fuel efficient as other cars. Therefore, if fuel economy is what you’re after in a car, then Smart probably isn’t your best choice unless you’re willing to pay for the electric Smart car.

Total cost

Smart vehicles can start out near fifteen thousand dollars brand new. While this is inexpensive, you may want to consider the cost of a vehicle above base. For a few thousand more, a second set of seats can make a Smart car comfortable and viable for the entire family. However, Smart cars don’t have a lot of the features that other cars have, like satellite radio. In terms of luxury, Smart cars are built to be more minimalistic than luxurious, which results in very simplistic perks like alloy wheels and power windows. If you’re interested in getting more from your car for your money, Smart cars aren’t really the way to go, but rather are made for those who want something small, simple, and easy to maneuver.

Safety features

Most smart cars do not have backup cameras or alarms that tell you if something is in your blind spot. They do not need the extras because they are so small and the visibility is very good. You can purchase models with more safety upgrades if you are not comfortable with the standard features. One thing most smart car drivers comment about is how different the feeling is behind the wheel when it is windy. Because Smart cars are smaller and lighter, heavy winds have more of an effect on the vehicle. If you live in an area with frequent high winds, it may be a good idea to speak with a local automobile accident attorney to discuss what your potential liability is for any accidents that may arise from weather interference.

Upkeep and maintenance

Because Smart vehicles are smaller, the maintenance needs have the potential to be cheaper. However, Smart cars are made for city conditions and aren’t built for rough terrain or to take on a lot of strain from steep or winding roads. This means that if you plan to use your car for long road trips or mountain drives, you’ll be paying more for repairs and maintenance with a Smart car than with a more durable vehicle. However, if you live in a relatively level area and plan to use your vehicle for mostly shorter commutes, then a Smart car may be an economical choice for you.

While Smart cars aren’t for everyone, they do have their uses. City-dwellers who want something compact and easy to maneuver for work commutes and city drives will find Smart cars to be a convenient, minimalistic vehicle. Those with more rugged terrain that need a tougher car, however, may need to look elsewhere.
