Go Ahead Gear-Head : from Hobbyist to Opening Your Own Repair Shop

While millions of people use cars on a daily basis, there’s only a select few who have the passion and drive to understand car maintenance. If you have a passion for fixing vehicles and know you have the necessary knowledge to help others, you should consider opening your own repair shop.

Make Sure You’re Ready

Before you even think about opening your repair shop, you need to be beyond confident that you’re ready. You should have experience working not only with your vehicles but ones owned by friends and family. Before you open, offer your services to people you know at a reasonable rate. See how your efforts work out for them and make sure that you’re able to work on a variety of vehicles.

Find a Good Location

Location should absolutely not be an afterthought. Your repair shop needs to be in a sizable spot that can be easily accessed by customers and things like tow trucks. You might consider putting it near a location that’s frequently the site of accidents. There should also be strong signage that catches the attention of passersby.

Keep Learning

Pride as a business owner can lead you to think there’s nothing new for you to learn. This can turn into arrogance that lets you get lapped by competing repair shops. Do all you can to learn new techniques and perspectives about car repair. You might be astounded by how much your world changes in a short amount of time, based on new techniques. You need to be ahead of the curve and always be interested in finding out what’s changing the game of car repair.

Be Professional

While you might think you have the energy to do everything yourself, your body will quickly tell you otherwise. You need to have an experienced and dependable staff. This should be made up of people who all know the value of teamwork. Send out a call for mechanics with at least five years of experience. As your business grows, you can add less experienced mechanics and work to train them. Say you’re in Los Angeles. You’ll want to search for CA auto mechanic insurance to make sure you get a local agent as laws vary by state. It’s important to be insured in any business. As a mechanic it’s important because your work can put people’s lives in danger. You want to make sure that everything is done legally and correctly to the best of your ability.

Operating your own repair shop is a great way to turn a passion into a career. If you think you know a lot now, just wait until you’re a few years into running your shop. Every day is sure to bring you new challenges, but these are ones that are a pleasure to overcome. Your community will be proud to have such a dedicated servant in their midst.
