DIY Tricks to Repair Body Damage After an Accident

Many DIY gearheads are skilled at handling tools with their hands. As a car owner, you might fit into this image as someone willing to do some of the manual labor. Sure, you can change your own oil and change out old windshield wipers, but more serious body damage to the bulk of your car might have you scratching your head. Here are several DIY tips to help you repair your car's body damage after any accident it might have undergone.

Touch Up Paint

Apply touch-up paint on minor scratches and replaced body panels. You can look up the specific paint color for your car model online, and most places will carry the generic shades.

In addition to finding the right paint, it's important to blend the paint colors properly by applying the right brushstrokes. After an accident, there are obvious color differences that separate the damaged area from the repaired one. Start by using the right paint colors, brushes, and application techniques. Also, work carefully to avoid having to retouch the areas.

Scratch Repairs

Painting over a simple scratch seems easy, but the deeper scratches need filling. The work requires more than the use of touch-up paint. If the primer is visible, apply several paint coats or use a filler made for scratches. Afterwards, sand over the area and apply a wax. Work on a small surface area to avoid worsening the scratch's appearance.

Rust Repairs

The two types of rust repairs are made at a surface or perforated level. Removing visible rust is possible, but a perforated repair takes more time and expertise. Use the same techniques of removing the rust with rust removal treatments and then applying a filler.

Replace Body Panels

Many car repairs are basic do-it-yourself tasks, while others are more complicated to do, such as repairing an old engine or replacing damaged body panels. You have to match the panel alignments with the doors and ensure all of the parts fit. Start by choosing the proper fitting panel types and sizes according to the manufacturer.

Having the right skills in welding is necessary to weld the panels into place. Practice your welding skills to achieve effective results. Also, check the areas for any damages created during the repair process.

After an accident, you may be able to get a settlement and some money to cover repairs, but it might not handle all your costs. Auto body shops are made to fix every car problem imaginable, but to save money, you can rely on building your own car repair skills. Some people think that fixing simple dents or scratches is a time-consuming task when it takes only a few minutes. OnOverall, make the attempt to do some of the repair work yourself and save hundreds of dollars.
