Automatic VS Manual: Pros and Cons When Choosing Your New Car

Choosing a new car can be a complicated endeavor. There are all sorts of models and features to choose from. If you’re a newcomer, many of these can be confusing. One example of a choice you will have to make is between a car with a manual transmission and one with an automatic transmission.

This is a huge decision and will have a big impact on how you drive your car. Still, many people don’t know what the real differences between these options are. To help, below is a short overview of the pros and cons between each choice.

Automatic Transmission Pros

Cars with automatic transmissions are much easier for most people to drive. The transmission shifts the gears for you automatically. You will have far less to worry about when controlling the car. It will, in most cases, be much easier for you. You will, for example, be able to keep both hands on wheel at all times. These are the reasons why automatic transmissions are preferred overall by consumers.

Automatic Transmission Cons

Automatic transmission cars are more complex mechanically and have more complicated computer control systems. As such, they cost more to buy up front and cost more to maintain overtime. They are also slightly less fuel efficient and will cost you more in gas over the long term as well.

Manual Transmission Pros

With a manual transmission car, you have direct control of the gears. This is not the case with automatic. This can give you a stronger ability to stop or slow down your car. Some people, especially car enthusiasts, prefer this level of control. Manual transmissions do not require as much maintenance as automatic cars. Manual gearbox repairs may be required at some point, but every car will need some sort of repair. They also use less gas and are often cheaper at dealerships.

Manual Transmission Cons

The big downside to manual transmissions is they are more difficult to drive for most people. There’s an extra pedal that must be used. You will also have to take your hand off the wheel to use the clutch to shift gears. It’s a lot more work. Just because automatic requires more maintenance doesn’t mean you won’t have to pay for repairs.

Choosing between an automatic and manual transmission is a huge part of buying a car. Most consumers prefer automatic transmissions due to their ease of use. Still, however, others may prefer a manual transmission, especially enthusiasts. Don’t make your decision lightly. Put a lot of thought into it.
