4 Details Every Parent Should Teach Their Teenager before Getting Their First Car

Freedom and driving go somewhat hand in hand, but there are important driving and vehicle ownership aspects that teenagers need to know about before holding the keys to their own set of wheels. While there is usually some degree of parental anxiety when a child begins driving, everyone can experience a greater peace of mind when teens gain competence about not only beginner driving skills, but also responsible reactions and habits for drivers and car owners. Read on for some great details to go over with your teen.

Driver Safety

Teach your teen driver the important of driving safety by enrolling him or her in a driver's education course. These courses are indispensable in teaching awareness while on the road and also how to handle a myriad of situations and circumstances such as how to handle driving in school zones and how to react to emergency vehicles. It is very important that your teen feel comfortable and up to date with all local driving rules and regulations. Additionally, spend a lot of time pointing out details while driving with your teen and also pointing out any errors that other drivers on the road are making. It is vital that your teen always see your wearing a seat belt and avoiding distractions such as cell phones.

Auto Insurance

Explain to your teen that some insurance companies offer student discounts to youth who maintain specified grade levels. This is a good incentive to have your teen hit the books and take school seriously as well. You might also consider having your teen pay for all or part of his or her own auto insurance policy, as this is a good way to teach fiscal responsibility. Some companies, like United Security Agency know that it also helps them learn that driving and vehicle ownership is not all fun and games. Give gentle and loving reminders that showing responsibility in other areas of life lends well to being ready to drive competently.

Car Care

Teens should know the basics of caring for a vehicle. Teach your teen the importance of using and having familiarity with the vehicle owner's manual. Also teach him or her how to check brake fluid. Be sure that your teenager keeps up with car washing and that he or she especially gives attention to keeping the windshields clean and the windshield wiper fluid levels full. It is also important to keep up with oil changes and to know how to check oil levels.

Tire Care

Make sure that your teen driver knows how to act defensively when it comes to avoiding tire damage. Teach them to remain attentive and avoid driving over potholes or stray objects on the road. Teach them how to have awareness of curbs, especially when backing up. Teens also need to know how to check tire tread and tire pressure. Instruct them in how to use a tire pressure gauge and be sure that one is kept in the vehicle at all times. Have your teen driver exhibit confidence and knowledge by showing you how to both check and adjust tire pressure.

Assist your child in the selection of the first vehicle and how to check safety ratings and other information. When a vehicle is selected, be sure to go over the various interior controls and also how to make adjustments such as seat adjustments. By taking time to acquire skills and learn responsible practices as well as the reasons for them, your teen can become a driver and car owner who is as prepared and knowledgeable as possible.
