1 Reason not to Attend Digital Dealer 11 This Fall

You may remember I wrote an article in February of this year, titled, "1 Reason NOT to attend Digital Dealer 10." The premise of which was based upon the ideals set forth in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in which I made the argument that those operating even at the highest levels of management were doing so with solely their best interest in mind and not that of the dealers who attend the event. 

 

Fast forward to today and one of their new employee's, Arnold Tijerina, continues to prove that supposition to be a reality. Furthermore, I offer Digital Dealer's own employee's unprofessional post and personal attacks on the Driving Sales Forum as supporting evidence as to why I will not attend and why I recommend others seek to attend conferences that put our -- THE DEALER's -- best interest first. Read the post, and read the link you posted along with the entire thread. I posted a reply there, but have to humbly say that I did not interpret Arnold's comments to be unprofessional, or a personal attack on anyone. Not sure what drove this, but I am a bit stumped, as it certainly appears this is a personal attack on Arnold, am I wrong?  I find Digital Dealer to be an excellent conference for folks who are brand new to the industry as well as to those who are very advanced.  There are so many presentations and resources to choose from that there is something for everyone.  My strongest recommendation to anyone is that regardless of which conference you attend - make sure you MEET other people and network. I continue to communicate on a daily basis with people I met at these conferences many years ago and they have been an invaluable resource for me in this fast-moving market.

You're right...it really comes down to quality (Driving Sales) versus quantity (Digital Dealer, or ADM for that matter), but they each have their purpose...

 

I go to DD largely to catch up with friends...definitely not to listen to the "expert" speakers, most of whom are hardly experts...it's more like bad peer counseling.  It's disappointing to see so many dealer employees leave the DD conference (and others like it) with so much bad advice and information written in their note pads and binders.  On the positive side, the expo portion of DD is a nice value-add for attendees, so aside from the NADA Convention, I don't know where else you'd see as many vendor displays in one place.

 

On the flip side, I go to DS (and JD Power) for quality information, as well as to catch up with friends/acquaintances too.  The reality is that Jared Hamilton at DS has a much deeper integrated understanding of dealership operations, e-commerce, digital marketing, and technology than anyone I've spoken with in any forum, or conference, or meeting to-date.  There is a reason why he is a regular instructor at NADA University/Dealer Academy while none of these other so-called "experts" are; it's because Jared truly knows his stuff and is sincerely focused on helping dealers improve their businesses.

 

That said, I'm personally passing on DD this Fall and just going to DS and JDP...and of course the IndyCar finale that weekend after JDP...=)  Hope to see you all at one or the other!
