The first step in advancing the productivity of your staff in using the phones is a better understanding in the importance that the telephone can play and how it affects your business. Often a lack of the right attitude is displayed in the treatment towards the receptionist position. The receptionist is usually hired without any guidelines that would be used to hire for an important position. In your dealership do you have personality profiles, set interview questions and guidelines to hire…Continue

Online reputation has been a hot topic for a couple of years now. As solutions continue to emerge and the business of reputation management as a service expands, there's a dangerous trend that should be addressed.
Reputation management isn't about sending an email. It's not about filtering results by checking their sentiment first before directing them to the…Continue

vAuto is officially entering the new-car market. The company said Wednesday it is launching an inventory management and pricing system for dealers’ new-car departments that aims to boost sales, profitability and transparency.
Through this new tool — called Conquest — dealers have “a new way to win in new vehicles,” where they can simultaneously lift sales and profits while fostering greater clarity and less confusion for consumers, said vAuto founder Dale Pollak.

Autotrader was the first “big name” site to sell your vehicle online and rightfully so. Autotrader has massive name recognition with tons of auto listings. It incorporates a user-friendly search interface with tons of options for narrowing your search like transmission type, interior options, and engine type. With a massive database of vehicles there comes with it some drawbacks.
Because of Autotrader’s massive database users typically overprice their…Continue

I recently laid out five reasons dealerships shouldn't ignore Bing. As I mentioned in the post, there's no doubt Google dominates the search engine market. It's often the first and only thought when dealing with…Continue

There is a plague spreading among car dealerships. I call this affliction “deal’itis.” In the last month, I have been in many dealerships working side by side with managers and salespeople. I began to quickly notice the results of this sickness. Those results are things such as lower sales, low closing ratios, low gross profits and low customer satisfaction.
Just like a good doctor should do, I began to look for the symptoms of this sickness and what could be causing this…Continue

As the holidays quickly approach, many companies are giving back to their customers. Through toy drives, volunteering at local charities or fund-raising, businesses across the nation are pooling their resources to help the needy. Some businesses, however, have chosen to direct their resources to the people that help them remain successful: their customers. And it’s paying…Continue
You hear search engine optimization being described as an iceberg sometimes, with the on page elements as the tip and then the rest of the business underneath the surface. Honestly, it's a good way to illustrate the trade, because there is so much more to it than you see on the surface, but it's also easy too get too caught up in the metaphor. People focus so much on learning the hidden depths of the…Continue

When you strip away your bricks and mortar, Website, CRM systems, inventory and everything else, what really matters? It’s your people. The bottom line is, people make a business successful or unsuccessful.
If you are a dealer or a leader of a dealership, what are you doing to recruit, hire, train, motivate, educate and retain good and even great people? If you truly want to see what is most important to you, then all you have to do is review where you spent your time…Continue

Customer satisfaction and customer loyalty are two different things. The Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) scores that many dealerships and manufacturers rely on as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) do not really have much to do with building loyalty. Customers can be loyal to a company and have an unsatisfactory experience, or they can have a very satisfactory experience without being loyal to the company.
I believe the CSI surveys should be phased out and replaced with…Continue
As I've said on many occasions, there are only a handful of social media websites that you need to focus on at your dealership. Despite claims that you need to be on dozens of them, the real ones that are making an impact today and in the near future are Facebook, Google+, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest with Instagram, Foursquare, Tumblr, and LinkedIn sitting comfortably in…Continue
Often I find myself having a recurring conversation with my dealers. The topic? Website Chat. Chat is essential to a dealership if they want to capitalize on all potential leads. Many argue, “It’s a waste of money…it’s a waste of time… and it requires too much attention.” This is where I beg to differ. The average chat provider charges about $250 a month. Even if your dealership only sells three cars in a month directly from chat leads, wouldn’t you say that it’s worth it? As far as managing…Continue
