In this day and time, people frequently talk about doing the "right thing," but rarely are they interested in risking their comfort zone and what others might think to do what they feel needs to be done. Clifton Lambreth is one of those rare people. After working for over twenty years for the Ford Motor Company, he could no longer keep quiet about the problems going on behind corporate doors that were hurting Ford's financial bottom line, and… Continue

Domestic new car automobile dealers have already reduced their automotive advertising budgets to maintain profitability at reduced sales levels for both new cars and used cars.
Unfortunately, the added burden on General Motors and Chrysler dealers of what appears to be an inevitable bankruptcy – structured Chapter 11 or otherwise – has forced auto dealers to reconsider placing any automotive advertising at all. Both General Motors and Chrysler dealers have been cautioned by their… Continue

4-13-09 Apex, NC... I sent a friend of mine to the dealership over the weekend. He wants a Trailblazer SS. I suggest that he go see the HUMMER H 3 Alpha as well. It too is a V 8. It is fun, unique and very high profile to ride around in. There are not a lot of these around. It is different. He likes that. Plus you can climb anything in the truck, from an ant hill to Grandfather Mountain. The MPG is the same as the Chevy.
He shows up at the dealership I sent him to. Now remember, this… Continue

What a week. Service Managers I think you can identify with me on this one. A normal day for me goes like this:
1. Walk the Parking Lot everyday, touch every car and write on the windshield
2. Hold a production meeting everyday, talk about FRH
3. Hold a service advisor sales meeting everyday, talk about sales
4. Follow up on the Work In Process (WIP), close tickets
5. Review the Forecast VS. Actual, look at… Continue

This post will make all the professional sales-reps sick, just sick. It all started when I took a little trip North a few hours to watch my best friends son play baseball this weekend.
In the middle of the 3rd painfully slow inning (watching 9 year old baseball is like watching grass grow!) my buddy says: “what in the heck is Lexus thinking, I need a new car and they refuse to tell me what cars they have to sell.” I giggled a bit because I knew exactly what he was referring to. Lexus… Continue

4-11-09 Apex, NC... Holding gross for salespeople is the same as giving the store profit to the customer. Many customers often want something for nothing and are way out of whack with what they believe their trade is worth. Many salespeople want to make as much money as possible as the deal gets structured and want three of those deals a day. This creates a head banging scenario with the customer leaving and the salesperson bruised because of the non-results and time spent.
First be… Continue

Spending on paid search and display ads is evenly split, but don't expect one to eat the other's lunch anytime soon. Here's why.
Awareness --> Consideration --> Preference --> Purchase
Here are a few basic issues to consider when thinking about the purchase funnel verses the… Continue

Managing your CRM(customer relationship management) is key to your success in the dealership no matter who you are or what you do. It can be effective in all areas including service, parts, and of course the sales departments. It is most effective when everyone "buys-In" that taking a few extra minutes to update each customer file will help save everyone time. Including the customer. And when you can give your customers a great value on a vehicle without wasting their time, you start to build a… Continue

Sorry for the the sensationalist title but the fact of the matter is dealerships are getting fleeced on their websites. We took a realistic look at what dealerships spend over a five year period on their websites. So many dealerships are afraid to take control of their own website. It really is quite easy when you have the website built using an open source content management system. You can still display inventory easily, update specials and so much more. The video below explains a little more… Continue

I've been priveledged in my life to co-exist with some extrordinarly leaders. In the suburb of Cleveland where I grew up, I was fortunate enough to spend time with an Abbot in my parish who upheld the word vividly.
He drilled, “Be a Leader” into my head, and I have always strived to hold true to that phrase.
I really hope the current circumstances we are in economically allow us to see how great we can all work as a team. Don’t get me wrong, competition is necessary. However,… Continue

Not long ago I was in Las Vegas for an International Industry Convention, and I asked a question, which was apparently, a pretty good question, but not too common. The person running the booth asked if he could video tape the question and answer session for their company's website? At first, I was taken aback, but then thought, what the heck, sure I told him.
I then repeated the question for the camera,… Continue

My eyes were opened even with a horrible Migraine today at the Managers meeting. "UNDER EVALUATION" Is what I heard and still, I am in shock.
I have a crew of 2. Not only do we manage the leads from our 4 sites, we also take service appointments for 3 stores which takes most of Monday due to the weekend, we make sure all the the pre-owned vehicles have stickers made, pricing done and appointments set for either certification or used vehicle checks as well as photos taken for the… Continue
