A Toyota Dealer Writes to me...

 Jim, Thanks for stepping up concerning not only Truecar but all these other Internet pirates  who have figured out a way to become car dealers without a franchise or any other of the costs involved in being a brick and mortar retailer.To me it is the electronic equivalent of just lurking around my dealership and greeting My customers when they arrive and then coming into the store with them under the pretense of protecting them from us in case we were going to try and make a profit.

They claim to have facilitated 235,000 car sales last year as if those cars wouldn't have been sold without them,and at least $299 per car ,they cost dealers over 70 million dollars in income.It seems that they find weak dealers who are incapable of selling cars in their own market and convince them by selling cars into everyone Else's at fire sale pricing that they will become more profitable.

I am a single point dealer who started as a car wash kid almost 50 years ago and have earned and built my store by the old fashioned way but I am not blind to the opportunities provided by the Internet and we use it everyday.

Paying these people a blackmail fee to keep them from directing my customers to a store who has "signed" up to be their delivery service is bullshit and then demanding customers proprietary information is just the tip of the iceberg.

Next they will be offering Financing services,extended warranty,certification for Pre-owned,and other sources of our income.I think the dealers that are signed up with these people should just add the 299 to the transaction price  and pay their sales staff what they have earned.

In many cases the customer will show up here with the "TrueCar Deal" anyway and we will match it if we have to and I won't be paying them a nickel but I am sure that just helping the customer will be enough of a reward to them.

First the Manufacturers should get enough balls to stand up for the guys that invested millions of dollars in facilities and improvements to service their products.Some of the manufacturers and dealers are convinced that this the new way and we had better get on the wagon or be left behind but I am a car guy, we are successful because we have spent years developing relationships with our customers and I am not going to pay the overhead for people that intercept my Internet customers and then demand payment from us for negotiating "No Profit" transactions.

The customer can research invoice cost on any car without the TrueCar and like companies.Take back your store and stand up for yourself and the income of the employees that have helped build your companies.

The revolt is gaining steam...that said how often have you seen a football team garner a lead then go into the prevent defense only to lose the game....lets keep the foot on the gas people. Share Jerry's video in all your social networks...lets get this thing onto page one for any unTruthful Car searches!!!!

I am glad you made a comment here.  Perhaps you can get to the bottom of this.  Saturday I submitted a lead to TrueCar using my real name and an e-mail address of  I did not put in a real phone number.  Here's where it gets interesting.  I start getting e-mails to my work e-mail account and calls start coming in on my real number, I did not proved that info.  My real data had to have been extracted from Dorschel Automotive where I had previously bought an Infiniti. 

So here are my question to you:  If it did not come from TrueCar then where did you obtain my information that was sent to these dealers?   I will make a public admission of error once you answer this question.  See picture below. I did not submit a lead on your site, I only did so on TrueCar.

I am a National Sales Manager for I can't speak to the business practices of however I can confidently speak to those my business. We do not transact any business with TrueCar. The replies in your inbox resemble that of the auto-responses from the new car portion of We handle private consumer information with great care and are fully understanding of the laws of protecting this information. On your recent video post (TrueScam) your claim at 4min 33sec that we ( purchase information from TrueCar is false.

As long as there are dealerships in Chicago you'll never kill TrueCar, even if every single dealership here agrees that it's a bad service and they aggree to stop using them you'll have just enough greedy ones that will see that as an opportunity.  That's kept Autotrader and their outrageous fees alive for years.

Anyway, here's some more ammunition for the cause...

TrueCar doesn't update base prices when manufaturers do, great if you have a lot of aged inventory, not so great otherwise.

TrueCar thinks they deserve their fee if a customer that used them in the past comes back to you to buy another car without going back to TrueCar.

TrueCar changes flipping customers to a great used car from being a good option to being a more expensive option (they charge more for used car purchases than they do for new car purchases).

TrueCar makes an absolute mess out of lease deals by convincing customers that the TrueCar price is what they should pay with no regard for the difference between purchase and lease incentives.

TrueCar still can't get truck prices right.  With F-series trucks this creates a great opportunity for massive profit or the perfect chance to clarify just how "True" their prices are and earn yourself a very happy customer, depending on what kind of dealership you're at.  For example a moderatly equiped F-150 XLT with a few packages on it can have a "True"Car price (remember, $x below invoice?) that is almost $5000 over actual MSRP.


This is a shame really, a few months ago when their leads were all provided by member companies and associates (USAA, Consumer Reports, etc) I would have said it was a decent source for what it did.  Now that what seems like 90% of their customers provide false contact information I get the feeling that they're trying to smother us with garbage leads to increase the cost of doing busines while killing our margins at the same time.
