@ Aaron, Great point! For those who have not made clear that their opinions may not represent that of their employers, it may be wise to do so. I have used words to the effect " I represent no one on this or any other forum other than myself, my opinions are mine alone".I have also used "My opinion and a buck will/won't get you a coffee most places"

@ Ralph, I think Aaron's point and your comment deserve more exposure than they will get on this thread.

@Jim B, Mr. Dietz did send Jim Z. the email. Jim made the contents of the email public on this and other forums, then Mr. Dietz began defending having sent it. Below is Jim Ziegler's post:

Steven Dietz, managing partner of GRP Partners the financial backers of TrueCar just sent me this message, evidently to intimidate or blackmail me using my family. Didn't work because I am posting this publicly to show what low life's we're dealing with.

Steven Dietz of GRP Partners just sent me this personal message on another forum...

A few years ago my Son, Zachary had a problem and was arrested for driving with a suspended license. I just received a personal "BlackMail Message from Steven Dietz. Just to show you what dirty players we're dealing is the message Steven sent me...

Steven Dietz writes to me - Jim:  Your opinion on how I manage my personal business has little merit considering how poorly you've managed your own personal life.  I have enough class not to post this publicly.

Point well taken. Many of these comments will bring enough awareness to save an industry, a whole lot of dealers/vendors and a whole lot more employees. Ultimately, it will help restore local tax dollars for America...or we can serve a big portion of our deals to companies that will gamble them on Wall Street. We need to protect and grow our industry. Others want to reduce us and grow their portfolios. That would make our Founding Fathers roll over in their graves. You can't just make a sudden change with such a large industry. Our country can't handle it right now. Because we create so many consumer transactions, we have the best data in the world. Dealers haven't figured that out until recently. Now we're smarter and making changes to protect our future. We are starting with data security. Our comments come from an attack on us by TrueCar and now personal attacks by their partners. I'm sure they had something to do with it, or they want to deflect negative impacts on their CEO. They treat our industry like a game...our careers, like a game...our local industry, like a game...our profits, like a game...our loved ones, like a game. They had a 50/50 chance and they rolled the dice. They lost.

To Aaron's point; while I was employed at ADP Dealer Services, one of America's Top 100 Best Places to Work, we were always advised to clearly state when an opinion expressed was our own and not the company's.  I recommend to anyone expressing an opinion on ADM or anywhere else, that you clearly identify those opinions as your own and not to be associated with your employer.  This is not only the right thing to do, it may avert negative impact on your career.

Some of these opinions and attacks shared by individuals on ADM are pretty strong and may or may not be the opinion shared by their employer. I'm just saying!

If what I read is true, Mr dietz actions in mentioning a family member are despictable.  What goes around, comes around.  People who do things like this often end up on the same sword.

Mark Dubis is stepping out to show the wisdom he has gained over the years... His words ring true!

Comment by Mark Dubis on January 22, 2012 at 9:11am

I have never bought into the saying, "it's nothing personal, It's just business."  From my experiences I believe it's always personal.  We all have choices in our behavior and our actions.  The True Car debate is personal.  When Dietz raised the issue about Jim's son it was personal.

Jim Ziegler personally believes in helping and improving auto retailing and highlighting the value sales professionals play in our industry.

True Car and their investment partners believe in PROFITS, and if that means de-valuing the importance of the services a dealership provides, then so be it.

Everything of real value in auto retailing is always personal. We need to strive everyday to build meaningful and positive relationships with our customers and employees.  I am and will always be an advocate for hard working dealers serving their customers and communities.
