You're right about trying to explain Social Networks and Social Media to a dealer that does not yet get it or understand why they should be there.

I enjoyed watching this video, but had to chuckle when I saw the comments below... What's the point of all the comments questioning SEO in context with John's subject matter? The video shows an automotive professional grappling with the difficulties in explaining the concept of online communities to dealers who have never participated in one... The impact of SEO within the context of what John is addressing within this video would seem to be more consequential than representative of the core value. I am not "dissing" SEO, I am simply pointing out that becoming obsessed with the SERP ranking of a microsite or an online video does a great disservice to the remaining points of digital marketing value. And, as was pointed out by Brian, and which all of us who work in this space have seen repeatedly, the SERP ranking for many of our online assets is variable, with certain types retaining placement a lot longer than others.

Personally, after looking at hundreds of Omniture SiteCatalyst and WebTrends reports for various dealer web sites and microsites for over 10 years, I am often struck by the much higher conversion rates for search advertising driven traffic than from organically generated traffic (nationally, over 40%) and I am also struck by the difference between the SERP rank "staying power" of images in Google Image search versus video clips in Google Video search... I have some ideas about why photos retain their SERP rank so much better than videos, but it seems less important to me than simply factoring this characteristic into your digital marketing strategy.

the links are still there. I just searched for them. The difference is the keywords you used "ottawa" is a city- local search vs "ontario" which is the province and could take you 3 days to drive across. try "lincoln zephyr OTTAWA" and you will still see the same

John, sorry for the confusion in my questions because we did different searches. I looked at the search example in your video which showed your optimization for "lincoln zephyr ontario" which today, shows that the optimization done has faded significantly. So, yes, when you first post videos like "lincoln zephyr ottawa" the SERP's will have your results. But from your video example, it does not seem to have staying power.

we optimized "lincoln zephyr ottawa" . it organically generated 6 links on pge 1 of google

John...I did the search for "lincoln zephyr ontario" and did not see the anything impressive that is brand enhancing or search optimized. What am I missing here? I see one listing on www.carvideosonline.com that is in position #7 on page One that when you click, goes to an Adwords forum that is distracting potential customers? Help me understand....
