David, as a DMS provider we have always taken a stand that dealers data is their own and we don't sell data; however many third parties use aggregators to pull data which complicates things because even if a third party promises never to sell the data, dealers do not know what's in the agreements between the third party and the aggregator. Is the aggregator allowed to sell that data? More info in this blog:

I'm curious how Car Research is "the leading CRM provider"? I do agree 100% dealer data should be kept private.

There are also dealer agreements from DMS providers that contain language that gives them the right to share your customer's information.  If asked, they will provide an agreement without the sharing clauses.  You have to ask though, or they will share/sell the information your customers entrust to you. As the dealer, you are ultimately responsibe for it's security and liable if there's a law suit.

Um... which CRM has that in their agreement? Having worked for a long time for DealerSocket, I know for a fact that they do NOT have that in any way in their agreement. Just curious who he's speaking of... thanks.
