Michael--I hope when they do that they get great service from a dealer that makes a fair profit and was not a part of a "protection" plan that required contribution to the local "muscle". It is up to the dealer body to bring what the customers are demanding---transparency, great service, consistent pricing....without absorbing an additional $300 expense...agree?

@paul and ralph- glad you enjoyed: I definitely considered some different "ghosts" to haunt Mr. Painter; I figured I'd stick with people who were dead so no living car guys would wonder why I chose Ralph or Jim Zeigler and not them and why did I choose myself as the ghost of Christmas future (could have been good fodder for the next "Grant Rant" though) LOL

Chip,

Absolutely correct, it is not only the model that is changing, but the industry. It is evolving simply because of the way our newest generations shop for goods, services and more importantly information. The same technology that gives us the opportunity to express our opinions here easily and openly, is the same platform consumers use to arm themselves with information prior to the purchase of an automobile. My "Christmas Wish" would be that, in the future, my twin twelve year old daughters would be able to go to separate dealers, have a great experience with a informed salesperson and pay the same price for identical cars. Merry Christmas to all!!

Thanks, Paul... I was actually expecting Alan Mullaley as Ghost of Christmas present!

So I think we all get that using the one-off pricing as the model for all prices is a losing proposition, and that paying $300 for the privilege is added brain damage.... But what do we say to our non automotive friends and neighbors when they spend a month preparing to defend themselves in the marketplace, and 4 hours in the winning dealership only to pay a "different" price for the same car than everyone else did in the same dealership that week? We are complicit in this, and all the "Kiill the Beast" rhetoric only addresses the symptom, not the disease. The model is changing with or without us. The cure may be changing the experience with a strong dose of transparency. Just one man's opinion.

Brad did a great job of capturing Scott Painter as Ebenezer Scrooge in this Christmas Carol parody...
