Winter is Coming! It’s Time to Become an RV Snowbird

This is not a Game of Thrones reference; winter months are truly upon us. As mercury is gradually dropping, everywhere you see will soon turn into pristine white layers of snow. With bitter temperatures, dark days and blocked roads, this can be an extremely testing time for people up north. What’s the solution? Get hold of a used motor home, and turn yourself into an RV snowbird.

Who is an RV Snowbird?

In the United States, RV snowbirds can be classified into three main categories:

  • Fulltime RV Travelers: They love to follow the sun, and head towards the Southern states during the winter.
  • Northern Residents: They have a permanent address in the Northern states, but they make motor homes their second home and move south during winter.
  • Seasonal Workampers: They travel to the Southern states during the winter months and search for a variety of fulltime and part-time jobs.

Demographics show that the majority of RV snowbird population consists of US retirees. However, the RV industry is seeing a growing interest among younger professionals who are keen to become snowbirds, work remotely and follow a pleasant weather.

Choosing an RV Snowbird Getaway

As you are planning to be an RV snowbird, South is your only destination during the winter months. But to where? Will it be the sunny Southwestern region or the warm and tropical Southeast? We know how you can decide.

Camaraderie or Empty Space

Do you enjoy camaraderie and meeting new people? Or do you prefer traveling to a place that is less crowded? Each has its share of benefits and drawbacks, and what you pick is totally up to you.

If you are visiting the Southwestern states such as Arizona, you are guaranteed to enjoy fewer people and lots of open space. As a result, the RV campsite fees are also on the lower side. Moreover, the southern part of the country has a wide variety of landscape. So, you will have the option to live in a plush downtown for a week and move to the desert lands the next week. On the downside, however, chilly temperature during nighttime and frequent dust storms can pose a problem.

If you are heading towards the Southeastern states such as Florida, you are going for places that are preferred by most RV snowbirds. Expect a lot of people and soaring RV campsite fees during the winter months. Therefore, it’s advisable that you do your homework and book the camping grounds before you start the trip. You will also have to deal with humidity, so it’s better to come prepared with your sandals and shorts.

Achieving a Balance

The biggest advantage related to the Southwestern states is the abundance of cheap roaming space. You can even indulge in adventures if you are bored of traveling. However, living out of nowhere comes with the risk of going off the grid. There are limited amenities such as pharmacies and grocery stores. You will have to stay a little wary of desert insects and animals. Furthermore, you will have to deal with limited Internet and mobile network connectivity.

If you can find an affordable camping space, you are going to have a fun-filled time in the Southeastern states.  However, expect a higher campground fee due to a high traffic in these areas.

When you are buying a used motor home and planning to be a snowbird, keep these pointers in mind as they will help you spend the winter months in the most comfortable setting. So don’t waste any time. Contact a local RV dealer and get yourself your luxury home-on-wheels today.
