Using a Broker to Buy Your Next Motor Home: Know Which Type of Agent You are Dealing With

Many RV buyers, especially the younger lot, have little time (or desire) to drive all the way to the dealers’ showrooms and bargain with their sales reps. Yet, like everybody else, they want to get a good deal on their purchases. This is where a motor home broker enters the scene.

If you are on the lookout for a rig but lack either the patience or the experience needed for making the purchase, take the help of a professional. (S)he will not only assist you in finding the perfect unit but will also help you negotiate the price which will save hours of hassle. And THAT is the most valuable benefit of all.

However, hiring a broker does not mean that you have to commit to a deal only because your agent vouches for it. Don’t stop racking your brain or using your judgment. Otherwise, you may be lured into buying a wrong unit.  Remember, hiring a pro can save you a good deal of money, time, and frustration, as long as you are using the right type of broker. Therefore, first figure out what kind of agent you are dealing with.

Consumer-Focused RV Brokers

You may find dozens of RV brokers’ names on Google’s search page, but not all of them work directly for consumers. Hire the one who would represent you in a deal and not the seller. It does not matter whether it’s a small company, an independent professional, or a large online service provider, a consumer-driven business entity will always work in your best interest.  Their income comes from the flat fee that they charge for their services.  Many of the brokers have prior experience with dealerships, and therefore know the ins and outs of the automobile buying and selling processes.  With an inside knowledge of the dealership business, these agents can help their clients strike a goldmine. Don’t stick to a particular geographical region while hiring your broker. Many online service providers have a huge market reach and can help you grab a lucrative deal beyond your immediate region. From signing the contract to making arrangements for the delivery, these professional intermediaries take care of all aspects of the purchase. Their fee structure depends on the value of the vehicle.

Brokers Working for Both Dealers and Consumers

Often run by former car dealers or dealership managers, these brokerage services can vary in size and type. Some operate from small offices while some work as individual consultants.  Because of the nature of their business models, they have to maintain a good rapport with dealers, which means, your interest may not always be on their priority lists. Although they cannot offer you a price advantage as big as a reputed consumer-focused auto broker, they still can help you avoid a lot of hassles.

Clubs or Banks Working as Brokers

Many clubs such as AAA or Costco and several banks and credit unions offer brokerage services for a small fee. They typically have the partnership with local dealers and have a prearranged pricing in place.  Although they may not negotiate rates as low as brokers working directly for consumers, they can definitely help you avoid the hassles of negotiation and paperwork.

If you are ignorant about the nitty-gritty of auto-buying, it is better not to waste your time trying to decipher the confusing terms and jargons relating to road tax, financing, and a seemingly unending list of add-on fees. Hire a competent motor home broker instead. These professional negotiators can not only help you save thousands of dollars on the deal but also give you a lot of peace and convenience.
