Twitter Surpasses Estimates for Growth in the USA

US Twitter Usage Surpasses Earlier Estimates - Numbers worth tweeting about

In 2009, there will be 18 million US adults who access Twitter on any platform at least monthly. That represents a 200% increase over 2008 levels. Usage will reach 26 million US adults in 2010, a further 44.4% climb.

This forecast counts 11.1% of Internet users as Twitter users this year, a figure close in line with Harris Interactive and Pew Internet & American Life Project estimates of 13% and 11%, respectively, in spring 2009. In 2010, eMarketer expects 15.5% of all US adult Web users to use the microblogging service via any platform.

In April, eMarketer estimated that there would be just 12.1 million US adult Twitter users this year. The upward revision is due to growth in Q2 2009 even stronger than the huge gains seen by Twitter in Q1.

In June 2009, for example, Nielsen reported nearly 21 million unique visitors to That was a year-over-year increase of close to 2,000%, but also an increase over May 2009. Nielsen, comScore and Compete pegged US unique visitors at 18.2 million, 17.6 million and 19.7 million, respectively, that month.

Because many users access Twitter via text messages, mobile apps and various desktop applications, in addition to, eMarketer’s estimate of 18 million users for 2009 is somewhat conservative. This is due in part to research indicating low levels of engagement among the majority of Twitter users. (See “Do You Know Who’s on Twitter?” for more information.)

“Since our earlier Twitter user estimates were published in April 2009, the number of visitors has risen sharply,” said eMarketer senior analyst Paul Verna. “In addition, research data shows healthy—and growing—percentages of US Internet users adopting the popular microblogging platform. These two factors compelled us to upwardly revise our previous forecast.

“At the same time, there are indications that large numbers of users are abandoning Twitter after a short period of experimentation, and another sizable contingent seems to use the service only sporadically. With these trends in place, we felt it was prudent to take a conservative outlook on Twitter’s user growth over the next 18 months.”

@Matt - Good point about Twitter, and if you look at the ADM Showroom Page, about halfway down on the left side you will see a widget that streams all the Tweets in the world that mention "Car Dealer" in them. It is fascinating to just watch for a few minutes and see what people are Twittering about us. I was doing this at Ancira Auto Group last week, using their online community site at and a Twitter message came across showing a customer saying that their Nissan store didn't want his money... The GM of their Nissan dealership was in the meeting where I was demonstrating to 7 GM's various aspects of their Social Marketing Reputation Management system... We were luckily able to trace the customer because his real name was on his Twitter profile and the GSM called the customer using the data the salesperson had entered into their CRM tool, apologized and offered to personally take care of him. I followed up on Monday and learned that they were able to come to terms and made a deal. And that was just an accidental unintended outcome of showing the Group's GM's how monitoring any Tweets with the word "Ancira" in it worked!

@Matt - If you look at the comments in the post, it is interesting to note the high percentage of Twitter users that create their Twitter account and never come back to it, nor do they issue any tweets or updates. As microblogging gains in popularity, there will probably always be a strong presence for Twitter from two groups... The Tweeters and the Followers. I am not convinced that every Twitter user will be both... I also predict that the genre created by Twitter will produce additional resource sites, and we may even see specializations by different categories of microblogging "Publishers" and their "Subscribers". What Twitter has accomplished, very quickly, is a global presence that transcends the genre from a "freedom of speech" perspective, and the impressive feat of millions of people accepting a 140 character string message format limitation as "livable" and useful. Twitter has also injected new life into the URL condensation industry, with providers such as Tiny.url. So, regardless of the platform which seems to be prone to going offline on a regular basis, I think history will show the founders of twitter having accomplished societal changes that eclipse the significance of their technology platform.

We will soon see the commercialization of Twitter as evidenced by Twitter's recent changes in their user agreement... I anticipate something along the lines of the ads you see inserted into Feedburner RSS Feeds. Heck, you may even see Google Adwords adding Twitter to the same section like they do now for RSS feed ad placements.
