Truck Tactics: 4 Keys to Maintaining Your Diesel

Most diesel truck owners depend on their vehicle to perform a multitude of towing and carrying tasks at a moment’s notice.

In order to be sure your truck is ready to perform when you need it most, there are a few things you should keep in mind to properly maintain your diesel and keep it running at its best.

Keep the Engine Clean

In order to gain the most life out of your engine, it is necessary to keep it as clean as possible. Dirt is one of the most common causes of damage to a diesel, and allowing it to permeate the engine will have a drastic effect on your vehicle’s performance.

Ensuring the engine has clean oil, air and fuel will go a long way towards preserving your truck.

Use Quality Air Filters

Climate and environment can have a big impact on the health of your air filter. While a dirty air filter might not hinder aspects such as fuel economy, it can have an effect on the vehicle’s performance. Filters should be checked on a regular basis to make sure they are fully intact and clean.

Fortunately, for most vehicles, the fuel filter can be checked without having to remove it. Should you find any evidence of failure, the filter should be replaced immediately to keep the vehicle running efficiently.

Keep a Check on Your Coolant

Monitoring the coolant of a diesel engine should always be a top maintenance priority. As the coolant sits, it will become increasingly acidic. The high acid levels can begin to damage the radiator and other important parts of the engine’s coolant system. It is a good idea to have a diesel shop like Florida Truck & Trailer Co. check your coolant levels regularly and have it flushed when necessary.

Oil Changes

Most diesel engines will need an oil change every 7500 miles. However, your engine could require a different schedule of oil changes depending on how your vehicle is used. If your truck is used on a daily basis as a work truck, you probably will need your oil changed more often than a truck that is used more as a daily driver.

Good diesel engine maintenance will help to reduce the need for expensive repairs and keep you on track for a long life with your truck. When properly maintained, diesel-powered vehicles can provide excellent and reliable transportation whenever you need it for years.
