The Silvia was definitely listed among the more popular cars that were introduced in 88 and 89 in Japan. Although this particular model won the Japanese Car of The Year Award the Silvia ceased exporting under the badge and was re-badged for export as the 180SXand sold to foreign markets. At that time in Europe the versions of the Silvia were commonly referred to as the 200SX whereas in countries such as Canada the S13 that had body makeovers and looked quite different were referred to as the 240SX while the 200SX was left in a state of suspension for a brief period until it was wheeled back into the market as the Sunny/Sentra between 1995 and 1999.
What most people would not know about the Silvia S13 was that the entire construct of the car was a spin off from the 1st generation Cefiro otherwise known as the A31. The S13 was kept within the boundaries of automotive trends of the time as the engineers maintain a redesign protocol that saw re-lamping of fixed headlights and projector optics which were optional offerings. The car was not only redesigned and modified and branded continuously for foreign markets as even in Japan Nissan re-badged what was then known as the Gazelle to the Nissan 180SX before the decision was made for it to join the export faction.
The production of the Silvia S13 continued for 6 years from 1988 right up to 1994 overlapping with the production of the S14 brought into the market in 1993. The differences were slight, but enough to keep the markets rolling, for instance the Silvia used fixed headlights whilst the 180SX exports which were basically hatchback versions of the S13 were fitted with pop-up headlights to give the car a ‘sportier’ character which bode well with the market. In order to up the ante, Nissan even went as far as to produce a Silvia convertible but the production ran aground, not due to the car, but due to the rising Yen which made the convertible simply too expensive for its class.
As for the engines of the S13, initially they were fitted with a CA18DEor alternatively with as CA18DETengine that were brought forward from the excess production meant for the S12. The engines were accompanied by an inter-cooler system (CA18DET) which gave the engine a slight boost of power and stability.
Eventually in the beginning of the 90s CA18DE & CA18DET were replaced with SR20DE and SR20DET engines that offered significant improvements from almost every perspective ranging from boost in power and torque because of the enhanced displacement and a turbocharger that was simply much more efficient than those that were offered for the previous models.
