The Eighth Commandment of Automotive Video Marketing: Use RSS [Tutorial]

In this post I will show you what you need to know to exploit RSS (Really Simple Syndication) for syndicating your online video content, specifically for videos hosted on your YouTube channel.  Why YouTube? Well, if you really need to know, start here.  Actually, as we’ll soon learn, there are two variants of RSS to choose from for syndicating rich media content. Why bother with RSS?  It's the eighth commandment of course!  Actually, aside from being really cool technology, it allows you to quickly maximize the reach AND SEO value of your video assets.  And RSS gives you the ability to broadcast your video content as a streaming news feed on ANY device.

Way Back When

Remember the days when we had to visit all our favorite sites on a daily basis to get our daily diet of information? Then came RSS and all things changed. All that we had to do was to get an RSS feed aggregator, subscribe to RSS news feeds and we could see through the latest content of site just like an email client. RSS news feed standard has come a long way from that point. Today it is being used for syndication of podcasts and videos.

What Is RSS For Video Syndication And How To Use It

RSS feeds are not only used to just send latest website details but they are used for a number of multimedia related purposes. A special specification for development of content intensive RSS called the Media RSS (MRSS) was developed by Yahoo! in the year 2004. Today there is a thriving Media RSS community, which allows for syndication of various multimedia files like audio files, images and video files right inside an RSS feed. With the increase in popularity of user generated content and podcasts becoming the rage of the day. Media RSS has become a part and parcel of our lives.

A number of popular video related services like Yahoo! Video Search can recognize MRSS feeds. This is the reason a number of content developers put their video files in MRSS enclosures.

MRSS vs. RSS

RSS and MRSS can both be used for syndication of downloadable as well as streaming video content. There are reasons that make one mode of delivery better than the other.

While the videos in streaming MRSS enclosures can only be viewed on a device where MRSS feed is downloaded, the downloadable video can be transcoded and converted to a format compatible with any device. This means that consumer of the content can watch the video on any device he likes.

YouTube RSS Feed For Your Channel

Not many people are aware that you have your very own YouTube RRS feed for your Channel. Just as a website or blog RSS is important in assisting you to get targeted traffic and that you are providing an update of fresh content. The same applies to your YouTube Channel RSS.

To access your YouTube RSS feed you need to replace YOURCHANNELNAME is the following URL:

 

http://www.youtube.com/rss/user/YOURCHANNELNAME/videos.rss

 

And to show you how it is formatted you can look at the WeSellDigitally YouTube channel.

As you can see it includes your titles, descriptions, ratings, upload date, views count & video time length. It doesn’t however include your Video keywords, so this is another reason why it is important to put keywords within the video description.

Now that you know your YouTube RSS feed URL you can submit it to RSS Feed Aggregators either manually or via your chosen software.  In the remainder of this post, I’ll show you some cool things you can do with your YouTube channel feed!

As a matter of fact, to do this, all you need is just a technology capable of converting your selected RSS feed into something that can be easily pasted and copied into a blog post or inside the HTML template of your web site.

While preparing this post, I reviewed many of the RSS-to-HTML tools that I have discovered out there and which allow you to easily display any RSS feed on any web page, or social media site, rapidly and easily.

Some of these RSS publishing tools are capable of generating fancy and highly customizable embeddable widgets, like the one displayed above, some others simply generate a piece of JavaScript, HTML or PHP code that you need to paste in the appropriate section of your site.

Here are a few basic criteria to allow you to easily compare and identify the ideal solution for your specific needs:

  • Technology type: JavaScript widget, PHP script, HTML embed, etc.
  • Customization: Personalize the look and feel.
  • Import OPML: Import an OPML file which contains multiple RSS feeds
  • Social media integration: Embed on social media sites.
  • Pro starting price: First price level to access extra features.

For my exhaustive list of tools, you can email me a request and I will be happy to supply it.  For now, I will focus on one of the tools that allow you to embed your YouTube channel RSS feed on your Website or blog with relative ease. 

How To Create Your Own Embeddable RSS Widget for YouTube

As mentioned, there are  myriad of tools to help you with embedding your RSS feeds almost anywhere you can think of.  The example here is representative of what to expect from the rest of the class.

Feed Informer

As with most of the tools, feed.informer provides you with your own custom feed digest in HTML or PDF, an image file, or a flash object. With feed informer you go through a brief registration (recommended) by supplying your feed URL as shown.

Now that your feed is created as shown you may complete the publishing process in 3 easy steps.

There are a number of settings to review in step 2 of the publishing process however there are only two you need to pay attention to for our purposes as shown.

Note that besides naming your digest you can specify how many items in your RSS feed the tool will display.  Depending on your application, you may want to adjust the number up or down. You may go as high as 50.

There are a nice selections of templates, think of them as style sheets, to chose for for your digest. Finally, you can publish to a variety of formats, including javascript for embedding as shown.

How to use and when to use?
RSS and MRSS have changed the way video distribution works. The specification can be used by anyone. The process is very simple. Just add the MRSS extensions to your RSS feed and you can deliver video content to your audience without forcing them to check on the website every now and then.

What is more, you can add advertisements and / or promotions (both banner and discrete text) in the feeds. With that flexibility, you have a powerful tool and highly cost-effective for helping to maximize your investment in video marketing.
