The Advancement of Technology in Private Number Plates

The field of number plates has experienced the advancement of technology over the last two decades. A normal camera is unable to pick up the number plates in an effective manner. Specially modified cameras that use infrared light receivers can get a clear image of any car number plate. In the process of normal scanning, the picture of the vehicle is taken with the gathering of necessary data.

Now, once an image of the registration plate is taken, both the data and the image of the particular vehicle is transmitted to the specific processor. The Optical Character Recognition or OCR technology is applied to examine the infrared image. The machine learning can read the number plate accurately from the entire image and separating the letters and numbers from the rest of the picture.

Going on, once the processor receives the text string, it is then forwarded to a database that scrutinizes it against the records. If it gets matched, the driver is allowed to make use of the tollway and park freely. If it doesn’t match, the number plate along with the entire image is forwarded to the department of billing or the parking enforcement agent for further deal.

  • ANPR technology:

The particular technology makes sure that the driver has paid for the parking of the vehicle. Even, it is spreading its applications across urban planning and the law administration. The ANPR enable CCTV cameras to have been used throughout the UK, US, and Europe. The cameras are designed to identify the stolen automobiles and the criminals’ possessions. The technology helps in identifying when, where and how various types of vehicles make use of the highways and public roads. The gathered information is conveyed to the central planning and control stations. The city officials become eligible to make proper decisions about directing the traffic flow.

The ANPR system along with the speed sensors are covering millions of names, dates, and initials to catch the criminals and smuggled properties. The technology of the camera and power supply is progressing fast and soon ANPR technology can be fixed to drones. It will allow law enforcement officials to move the cameras wherever and whenever required. It will be beneficial in terms of greater reach for the identification of the person traveling.

ANPR is also known in several terms:

  • Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI)

  • License Plate Recognition (LPR)

  • Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR)

  • Vehicle Recognition Identification (VRI)

  • Lecture Automatique de Plaques D’immatriculation (LAPI)

  • Car Plate Recognition (CPR)

  • Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR)

  • Mobile License Plate Reader (MLPR)

  • Vehicle License Plate Recognition (VLPR)

  • Combat number plate theft:

The Technology of Radio Frequency Identification sticker on the front windscreen of the vehicle acts as a third plate that will self-destruct if removed. It will help the police to recognize vehicles that contain cloned or stolen number plates.

The DVLA or Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency are in charge of maintaining the drivers’ and the vehicles’ database and for managing the vehicle tax. The DVLA is at the helm of issuing motor vehicle registrations. The body also sets the regulations concerning the governing their exposure.

  • The procedure of car registrations by the DVLA:

New registration is issued to the newly bought vehicles. The number plate displaying the registration number is assigned to the new vehicles provides information about the issuing area and the issuing year.

The DVLA is responsible for prescribing and enforcing the accurate exhibition of the registrations on the number of plates. The scrutiny of the agency has intensified over the recent years. The MoT testing stations and the police have started checking the DVLA number plates with more care.

  • The transfer scheme:

In most of the cases, a car owner can sell or transfer the registration number issued by the DVLA from the old vehicle to another vehicle, or, to a retention document. The Agency is responsible for issuing a replacement number to the specific vehicle from which the removal of the original registration has taken place.

  • DVLA can hold back certain combinations:

Normally, the registration numbers are allocated to the vehicle owners through issue, direct auction, etc. But, there are certain occasions when the DVLA will make the decision that a particular combination of letters and numbers may be interpreted as offensive. Also, the controversial references to politics, religions, drugs, sex, terrorism, crime, etc. can be withheld by the DVLA.

Hence, with the use of the advanced technology, the identification of rude, stolen or forged number plates can be easily detected and crimes can be curbed.
