Teen Drivers: Why They Should Be Driving Used Cars

The dream scenario of buying your teenage driver a brand-new car brings a smile to parents' faces, but this purchase isn't always the best choice. In fact, most teens should drive a used vehicle as they learn the rules of the road. Learn how used cars are truly the answer when it comes to getting your teen on the road.

Accidents Happen

Teens are understandably shaky when it comes to driving at first. They're still learning how to follow the rules and avoid any accidents. Spatial perception is also being tested. There might be minor bumps with curbs, poles and other inanimate objects. When you give your teen a brand-new car, these dings and dents will frustrate the entire family. The vehicle is losing a lot of value, especially if it's a newly leased car. A used car, however, has its value in its functionality and purpose for the teen. Several dents in the car won't be a big deal.

Driving Down Insurance Costs

Insuring a teen driver is expensive. They don't have any history that tells the insurer about one person being a better driver than the next one. The parents might cover the teen under their policy too. In addition, the vehicle must also be covered in the insurance. Used cars don't typically have high values, so the insurance will be lower than covering a brand-new vehicle.

Earning the Privilege of Owning a New Car

Give your teen a reason to succeed in life. Buying them a new car at the beginning of their driving experience means that there's no reason to strive for anything better. Allow the teen to earn their new car as they grow older and trade in their original, used car.

Safety Features Included

Opponents of the used-car purchase state that these vehicles don't have all of the features necessary to keep teens safe, such as air bags and blind-spot sensors. When you purchase a used car from a dealership like Young Automotive Group, the vehicles have most of today's safety features. Lease returns are the bulk of the cars found on the lot, and they're about three years old. Pick from these cars so that your teen has every safety need covered.

Financing a used car is often easier and more affordable than a new vehicle. Speak to the dealer about financing options because they often have their own lender or industry partner. Securing that perfect, used car for your teen is a real possibility when you research the vehicle and dealer beforehand.
