SUVs Show Strongest Depreciation Record Across All Segments

Used vehicles model years 2007-2011 overall depreciated -1.4% in July, slightly more than the -1.3% pace in June and -1.0% level in May. Domestic cars depreciated -1.5%; import cars were -1.4%; domestic trucks were -1.4%; and import trucks were -1.3%. Average pre-recession depreciation is historically between -1% and -2% monthly.

  • SUVs enjoyed among the strongest depreciation recorded across all segments. All four SUV segments, Compact, Full-size, Luxury and Mid-size, were four of the top seven best-performing segments for depreciation during July.
  • Compact SUVs had the strongest month for retention, with values actually increasing 1.3% during the month. Vehicles in this segment include the Jeep Wrangler and Nissan Xterra. Average segment values at the end of July were $15,795, a -4.0% change from the same time last year ($16,460).
  • Cargo minivans saw the largest monthly depreciation, dropping -3.4% of value. Vehicles in this category include the Dodge Caravan, Ford Freestar, Dodge Grand Caravan, Ford Transit and Chevrolet Uplander. Average segment values at the end of July were $9,240, a -12.7% change from the same time last year ($10,588).
  • The car segment with the strongest depreciation change during July was the Premium Sporty Cars at -0.9%. Vehicles in this segment include the BMW 6-Series, Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C Class, BMW M6, Audi R8, Jaguar XK, and Cadillac XLR. Average segment values at the end of July were $42,152, a -15.0% change from the same time last year ($49,590).
  • The car segment with the largest depreciation change during July was the Upper Mid-size Cars at -2.6%. Vehicles in this segment include the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, Dodge Charger, For Taurus and Kia Optima. Average segment values at the end of July were $10,349, a -17.6% drop from year ago levels ($12,556).
