Small Registration Number Plate for Motorbike: Legal or illegal?

Small number plates: legal or illegal? Is this question revolving around your mind day and night? Is your small sized number plate making your rear tire of motorbike look bigger?

Now, let’s deal with the law:

As per the Government’s website “gov.uk”, the single row plates are illegal. The characters presented on the number plate should be set out over two lines. The number plate should be displayed on every motorcycle that is registered on and after 1st January 1973.

If the motorbike was registered prior to 1st September 2001, you can show a three-row registration plate. There is a strict two-row plate for many bikes. The bikes that are registered after 2001’s 1st September, the number plate becomes obligatory to be displayed on the bike’s rear.

Bikes registered before that date can possess a front plate too. The tricycles that are built from motorcycles should meet the rules meant for motorcycles. There are three separate era periods with own unique sets of character sizes.

The sizes are not applied only to the motorbikes that are registered after that date but to all the replacement number plate that is fitted after that particular date. Tricycles, quad bikes, etc. also fall in this category.

The features:

  • The characters should be at least 79 mm tall.

  • The space between the characters should be 11 mm.

  • The characters excluding letter I or number 1 should be 50 mm wide.

  • The space between the random letters and the age identifier should be at least 33 mm.

  • The thickness of the black print or the character stroke should be 14 mm.

  • The margins ( top, side, and bottom) of the number plate should be 11 mm.

  • The vertical space located between the age identifier and the random numbers should be 19 mm.

  • The trikes that are made from the base of the motorcycle have certain rules:

  • The characters should be 79 mm tall.

  • The black print’s thickness or the character stroke must be of 14 mm.

  • The space situated between the characters are supposed to be 11 mm.

  • The characters excluding letter I or number 1 should be 57 mm wide.

  • The vertical space lying between the age identifier and the random numbers should be 19 mm.

  • The space situated between the age identifier and the letters is required to be 33 mm.

  • The margins around the plate should be 11 mm.

There are specific rules regarding black or yellow plate. The vehicles that are manufactured before 1st January 1973 are allowed to display traditional black and white registration plate like the grey, white or silver characters on the black number plate.

Starting from April 2016, the vehicles that are built before 1st January 1976 are allowed to display the older style number plates. One should apply to the DVLA and get registered within the tax class of historic vehicles. Even, the vehicles that are manufactured before 40 or more years are free from tax. This 40-year exemption date automatically rolls forward on 1st April every year.

Other rules attached to the number plates of motorbikes:

  • The rider must light up the number plate during the dark.

  • The registration marks must be clearly readable. They should not be concealed by dirt.

  • The number plate should possess appropriate color, size, spacing, and font.

  • No images are allowed to display on the number plate. However, some images are granted to be displayed.

  • The vehicles should possess number plates mandatorily attached on them.

  • The owners are not allowed to rearrange or do any alteration to the letters and numbers on the number plates.

  • The non-reflective border is unforced or optional.

  • The number plates must follow the British Standard. It must include the plate supplier’s trademark.

You can check online and contact the number plate dealer to generate a unique and legal number plate for your motorbike. Most of the plates have a specific set size. The dealers try their best to build registration number plates that can adapt to the registration spontaneously. The smaller the registration is, the smaller is the number plate. You will receive number plates with laser polished edges.

If you have further query, you can ask the dealer’s representatives. Check out the number plate gallery.
