Your city is on the hunt, poaching speeders one by one in an attempt to squeeze cents out of you and knock sense into you. If you're a chronic speeder and haven't gotten caught, consider yourself lucky. But for most speeders, they know that heart-sinking feeling of flying past a cop going too high over the speed limit and may not know how to intelligently fight a speeding ticket. There's a one-second pause that seems to last a whole year. "Please say the officer didn't see that," you plead. No such luck this time.

So how many times has your commute car turned into a racecar? As you run out of fingers to count, you should realize that each of those times is putting you at risk of a hefty fine. Of course, you may not be doing anything malicious. You are just trying to make up for hitting the snooze button one too many times, again. For some people, the word "early" is not in their vocabulary. It's always a race against lost time. But guess what? You're hardly saving any time with that extra 10 mph, and you're unnecessarily putting yourself and others at risk.

Moreover, the more you get caught, the steeper the penalties. Is it worth finding out how much a speeding ticket is in Texas, or any other state? You put yourself at risk for a license suspension, higher interest rates, and progressively higher fines. Fortunately, if you have a habit of speeding, there are some simple steps to take to break it.

  • Cruise Control: How many times have you kept your foot on the pedal and then looked at your speedometer to see you were 15-20 mph over the limit? Again, you don't have enough fingers to count. Thankfully, there's a handy feature called cruise control to help you out. Just press your cruise control button while traveling at the correct speed, and forget about it. Just make sure you keep your foot on the brake pedal and adjust speed when needed.
  • Know the Consequences: You may not know exactly how expensive a speeding ticket is until you get one. It will end up hurting your wallet and costing you time in court if you choose to go. You should really take a look at what happens when you get a speeding ticket in your state so you know exactly what kinds of consequences you're up against. Fines are almost always above $100 and may creep into the $200 range depending on where you live. Knowing this may just cause you to be more careful.
  • Realize the Danger: It may be safe to drive the same speed as traffic, but it isn't when that means you're excessively speeding. The reason cops enforce speeding, aside from wanting your money, is that it makes the roadways more dangerous. It should go without saying that there are more accidents when speeding is involved, and with higher speeds, there's a higher risk of fatalities in those accidents. The statistics speak for themselves.
  • GPS Throttling: If your willpower isn't enough to destroy your habit of speeding, it may be a good idea for you to get a GPS device that controls your top speed. That way, if you try to exceed the speed limit, the technology will override you. The devices have a failsafe in the case of an emergency where you need to speed up to avoid danger.
  • Become Money Minded: Though you may not be getting speeding tickets for your bad habits (yet), you are surely losing money in gas. Your vehicle doesn't get optimal gas mileage when you speed, especially when you accelerate really quickly. This decreases your miles per gallon and you get nickel-and-dimed every time you drive your car.
  • Ditch the Radar Detector: This device may have been what gave you a bad habit of speeding in the first place. It encourages you to speed when there are no cops around. If you really want to stop speeding, ditch the radar detector and start being more conscious and aware on the roads.

Maybe you finally got the wake up call you needed to convince you to slow down and drive safer. If you want to break your speeding habits for good, you can enroll in a defensive driving course to prevent yourself from getting a ticket. Maybe you've already gotten a ticket. Well, aside from helping you avoid getting another one, a defensive driving course will significantly reduce the penalties on your current outstanding tickets. Yup, that means you'll be saving money and points against your driving record, all while becoming a better driver.
