Jumpstart Metrics: Share of Shopper Interest in GM's Cruze, Volt, Compared with Other Sedans

It has been reported that GM will be eliminating several passenger cars, including the Chevrolet Volt and Chevrolet Cruze, two compact vehicles that were held up as examples of the automaker's post-bankruptcy revival. The decision comes as Americans are reducing their shopper interest in passenger cars in favor of crossovers, SUVs and pickups. Jumpstart Automotive Media has new data for any continuing stories you may be working on that ranks GM's sedan shopper interest in relation to some of its closest competitors.

Will GM's Decision Benefit Honda, Toyota, Tesla & Others?

According to Jumpstart, the Chevrolet Cruze ranked 4th in shopper interest for the Compact Car segment. The Volt ranked 5th, and the Buick LaCrosse ranked 7th. The below chart illustrates where each of the impacted models ranked in shopper interest for their respective segments, along with the segment leader and cross-shopping selections.

"No doubt, a large number of American shoppers continue to turn their attention toward trucks, crossovers and SUVs of all sizes, and General Motors feels it's in their best interest to shift their strategy in this direction as well," said Colin Thomas, senior analyst, strategic insights & analytics. "While this strategy is in focus for GM, there is still a large population looking at cars, which means brands such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, and Audi could look to take an even larger share of the car and sedan market."
