Slide-outs are a great option for customers in search of a spacious RV for a comfortable traveling experience. Slide-outs offer RV enthusiasts the much-needed comfort and elbowroom in an overcrowded vehicle. Uneven roads, potholes and long trips can cause considerable harm to some of the mechanical components of your motor home slide-outs. One look at the damaged slide-outs and you ask yourself, ‘who’s going to buy my RV?’ No one will if you show them a vehicle with damaged slide mechanisms, especially if they are looking for more space inside the rig. This means that the slide-outs would require more attention if you are planning to attract prospective buyers and sell your used home-on-wheels. Here are three tips to maintain your motor home slide-outs and seals:

1. Lubricate Regularly

Most RV slideouts need lubrication on a regular basis. It’s always better to opt for dry lubrication. Do not use light grease even if some rig manufacturers recommend it. Light grease such as lithium will only collect more dust, dirt and debris. During the warranty period, you can follow original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations. However, after the expiry of the warranty period, apply nothing but a dry lube on all movable parts of the slide-outs. You’ll find several dry lube products in the market. You do not need to lubricate gearbox and motor assemblies connected to slideout rooms as they make the most out of modern bearings and sealed gears. However, remember to keep these parts clean. As far as cylinders and hydraulic rams are concerned, they require wiping with a clean, soft cloth and light oiling. Make sure you get rid of all remains of the lubricant fully once you are through with the wiping.

2. Check All Rubber Seals Meticulously

An RV’s slide room comes with rubber seals that stop the entry of air, water, and other elements into your luxury vehicle. If seals are damaged beyond repair, replace them with the ones that match the original. Check top and side seals very carefully. However, do not overlook the bottom seals. You’ll find seals that are fixed to one place, some are cemented to the mating surface, while the others put together with tiny metal chips. These metallic chips can become loose and even rust, thus affecting the functionality of the seals. Make sure that they remain flexible. Use quality seal protectants to retain their integrity. Slide-out seal treatment products will make your RV’s rubber seals more durable by protecting them against road grime, UV rays, pollutants and extreme wear and tear.

All seals, both on the inside and outside your motor home, should be inspected meticulously. The best time to check them is during the night. Why? When you inspect the seals in a dark RV with the help of a flashlight, any light leaking through will indicate that the seals are damaged. Have someone posted outside for checking this.

3. Inspect the Galley Components

If your RV’s slideouts have galley components like plumbing fixtures and appliances, inspect them on a periodic basis. Pliable drain pipes, propane lines, electrical cables and cold and hot water tubing are incorporated into these applications. While some motor home manufacturers include a reticulated raceway for hosepipes or wires to be routed in, others let them simply hang and move with the room. Make sure all of these components are protected and supported.

Focus on these slide-out maintenance ideas to keep your used rig in good shape. And when the times comes, you don’t have to wonder ‘who will buy my RV’, because there is no dearth of takers for a well-maintained rig.
