Self-Sufficient: 5 Car Repairs You Can Learn to Do Yourself

When you own a car, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to ensure it continues to be properly maintained. If you take care of your car, it will continue to operate well for you for years to come. While car maintenance can seem expensive, there are actually several repairs that you can complete on your own to save money and learn more about car maintenance.

Oil Change

The most basic type of car repair that all people need to know how to do is change the oil of the vehicle. Most people will need to get their oil changed at least a few times per year and doing so and easily cost over $100 each time. This is a very unnecessary expense as motor oil is actually pretty cheap and the process of doing it is fairly simple. Once you’re used to doing it, you could change your own oil and as little as 15 minutes.

Replace Battery

Another repair that you should be able to do on your own would be to replace the batteries of vehicles. A car battery can last for years but ultimately will need to be replaced once it shows signs of corrosion or doesn’t work as efficiently. While you can spend hundreds on unnecessary labor, a better option would be to buy your own car battery and learn how to connect it on your own.

Replace Headlights

If you notice that one of your tail lights or headlights are not working properly, you should avoid taking it into the auto body shop. Instead, you should head down to your local auto inventory store and purchase replacement bulbs. By following the quick instructional video online, you can quickly replace these bulbs yourself.

Tire Rotation

People end up wasting hundreds of dollars every year by rotating their tires with the help of a professional. While it can be more time-consuming to do it without the same equipment, many people could do it on their own if they have just a couple of car jacks. Doing this will extend the useful life of your tires.

Replace Spark Plugs

If you are having an issue starting your cars, the culprit is often the spark plugs. Before spending your money on your mechanic, you should try to replace the spark plugs on your own.

Before doing any auto repair, it is important that you know what you are doing. You should at least do it once with the guidance of a professional to ensure you are being safe and following the right procedure.
