Rubber For The Road: 3 Tips For Extending The Life Of Your Tires

Not only do your tires affect the efficiency of your vehicle, but they are also a key safety feature. Taking care of your car’s tires is going to extend their lifespan and reduce your risk of a catastrophic blowout. While your tires won’t last forever, there are a few simple steps you can take to make sure that they don’t wear out too quickly.

Keep Them Properly Inflated

The single most effective way to protect your tires and boost their lifespan is to keep them properly inflated at all times. Putting too much air in your tires is going to have a major impact on their traction and increase your risk of a blowout. If the tires are underinflated, then your vehicle is going to take a hit to its efficiency. Most modern vehicles have a tire load chart stuck to the driver’s door jamb. This table will tell you exactly what your tire pressure should be at various elevations and at specific times of the year.

Drive Safely

The way that you drive can affect the longevity of your tires. When you drive at high speeds for a long period of time, it can create an incredible amount of heat. Over time, that will reduce the lifespan of your tires by weakening the side walls. You should also avoid peeling out and taking turns too quickly. Drivers who have noticed chirping or squealing sounds when they accelerate should immediately head to a tire store, like Evans Tire & Service Centers. Those noises typically mean that most of the tread has been stripped from the tires and they need to be replaced.

Align Them Regularly

As you are inspecting your vehicle, you should take a close look at how much tread is on each of the tires. If the tires are wearing unevenly, then they are most likely misaligned. Another common sign of poor alignment is when a vehicle pulls to one side or another on a straight and flat road. Drivers who notice either of these issues should immediately head to their mechanic to have their tires balanced and aligned. Regularly aligning your tires can also save you quite a bit on gas by improving your car’s efficiency.

Modern tires are extremely durable, but they undergo an incredible amount of wear and tear every single day. From potholes to temperature fluctuations, they can become damaged in the blink of an eye. That is why it is so important for all drivers to check their tires as often as possible and immediately replace them whenever they notice any signs of damage.
