Right On The Road: 4 Common Car Problems That Are Easily Preventable

When you break down on the road, you're likely concerned about what could be wrong with your car. If you can't get the car started, then you'll probably have to get it towed home or to a mechanic to determine what is wrong so that you can decide the best way to get it fixed. There are a few common car problems that are preventable with routine maintenance of the vehicle. If you monitor everything from the fluids to how the car handles and sounds, then you can usually fix issues before they leave you stranded.

Dead Battery

One of the reasons why you might not be going anywhere is because of a dead battery. Your battery could die because you leave a light on by accident or because there is an issue with an electrical component that is draining too much power. You'll usually see more issues with the battery in the winter because the cold weather puts more strain on starting the vehicle. Pay attention to how long it takes to start the vehicle and if any of the lights are flickering as these are indications that the battery might need to be changed in the future.

Tire Blowout

When you're driving and hear a loud explosion, it's usually from a tire blowing apart. This is usually caused when a tire has damage to the outer edge or if there is something stuck in the tire. If you feel any kind of vibration while driving, get the tires checked to see if there are any issues. Rotate the tires on a regular basis and get the tires balanced so that they wear evenly.

The Starter

As you turn the key in the ignition, your vehicle should start right up in most cases. However, if there is an issue with the starter, then you'll probably hear a clicking sound with the vehicle not starting at all. As soon as you experience lags with starting the car, then you need to get the starter checked as it's a simple test that a mechanic, like those at Dualtone Muffler Brake & Alignment, can perform. It's best to get it changed right away before the starter does go out and leaves you with no way to get the vehicle started.

Bad Gas

You think that you're getting gas that is of a good quality when you fill up your tank. However, there are some gas stations that don't monitor the gas deliveries that they get or don't maintain the tanks as they should, which can allow water and dirt to get mixed in with the fuel. Bad gas can foul out the spark plugs and begin to clog your fuel filter. You can get your fuel system flushed or run a gas treatment through the tank if you suspect bad gas.

While there are car issues that can't be prevented, most of them can be with proper maintenance. Once you've been driving for some time, you can often get a feel for how the vehicle operates. It will be easier to determine if there is something that's not quite right and needs to be fixed before you get on the road.
