If you haven’t seen and learned about the power of Responsive Web Design, you’re missing a great new piece of digital marketing technology.  Responsive Design discards the idea of mobile websites, and instead, builds a multi-device-capable platform around a single website.

My company offers Responsive Websites, and I’m learning that others providers are also entering this exciting space.  For our automotive dealer customers, the benefits are enormous with sites that offer better consumer experiences, improved SEO and Social capabilities, and easier maintenance.

The next challenge for Responsive Website Design in the automotive space is convincing our 3rd Party Plug-in Providers to also embrace this technology.  I am referring to the various plug-ins for pricing, chat, online negotiation and financing, currently built around desktop and mobile websites.  When a Responsive Website attempts to plug-in some of these 3rd party modules, the consumer experience is not always consistent. Chat or pricing windows, for example, can appear in varied styles on smart phones and tablets.

Clearly some standardization around Responsive technology is needed for 3rd party vendors creating website modules, and Dominion is willing to help lead this charge.

What do you think?  Any 3rd Party Plug-in providers ready to dive in?

Thanks Larry, I was hoping to hear from PureCars.  I've had a few vendors reach out with updates.  I heard from ActiveEngage, and they are live today with a Responsive interface.  Other chat providers are still working on it and should deliver soon.  Our sister company GetAuto.com reached out, they have a "Value Your Trade" tool that is also built on Responsive technology.  Still hoping to hear from others, please urge them to post here on ADM.

I have found several vendors that are progressive with this technology. PureCars is one that continues to improve and help dealers “Win the Click” in the digital marketplace. Their products use an adaptive response layout that automatically adjusts in size depending on the size of the device.  There are no apps to install or settings to configure, just a seamless presentation from large screen desktop monitor all the way down to smartphones.   With tablet and smartphone usage increasing at a rapid rate, they recognize it’s important to assist consumers in the format their most comfortable in.  Thousands of dealers, nationwide, currently utilize this technology on their Value Reports and Trade-In reports to maximize digital marketing efforts.

I agree with Joe, I see it many times with potential clients who come to us for an assessment. It is always a bit of a shock for them when we show them this. It tells me they are not checking and someone needs to educate them with this solution. Thanks George for this as well as the video Brian created as well.

The developer community needs to establish some standards and working relationships to expedite testing across website platforms and vendor solutions.   It would be a great start to have a developer meeting at AutoCon 2013 if we had enough companies willing to meet for an exploratory meeting.  I could get you a conference room for a private discussion for industry members wanting tighter collaboration with third party website tools.

Just yesterday we were video chatting with one of our dealer clients, walking them through website design practices.  When we pulled up their mobile site (which SHOULD be responsive and adaptive), the entire screen appeared to be overrun by a pop-up from a conversion tool they use.  Simply put, if you wanted to reach the dealer's website, you were going to spend some time getting around a nuisance of a pop-up.

Responsive webdesign has been around for a while now, it's nice seeing the automotive space getting involved now.
