Protecting Your New Car: How To Maximize Its Lifespan

If you take care of your vehicle, it could last for up to 200,000 miles or more. That may allow you to drive it well after it has been paid for, which could save you thousands of dollars a year in transportation costs. Here are some ways that you can maximize the useful life of your car.

Take Care of Routine Maintenance

The easiest way to get the most from your car is to take care of routine maintenance such as rotating the tires or changing the oil. Tire rotations and oil changes should take place every 5,000 miles or so. Other routine tasks that can help your car last longer include regular car washes, checking for minor damage daily and getting a yearly inspection.

Have Dents or Scratches Repaired Immediately

If you notice that there is a ding or a scratch on your car, you should take it to a repair shop such as Central Body Company, Inc. While a minor blemish on the vehicle may not seem like a big deal, it could get worse if you let it linger. A dent could grow or allow air to make contact with the metal frame of the vehicle. Combined with salt and cold temperatures, the car could start to rust and suffer extreme damage. Scratches that aren't repaired quickly may bake into the paint, which may require the entire panel to be replaced.

Keep the Car Stored in a Controlled Environment

Your car may have to work harder when it is trying to warm up after a night out in the cold. If a car is left outside in the hot sun, it could wreak havoc with the engine oil and other components that don't handle heat well. Therefore, you should keep your car stored in a garage or carport to keep it from getting too hot or too cold. You may also want to cover the vehicle during times of extreme weather if you have to leave the car outside.

It is always in your best interest to keep your car running for as long as possible. The good news is that anyone can take good care of their vehicle no matter how much interest or expertise that they have when it comes to cars. Keeping up with routine maintenance as well as taking it to an auto repair shop at the first sign of damage can go a long way toward keeping a vehicle in good running condition.
