Since leaving Corporate America I’ve often asked “does anyone in our industry know how to communicate?” or better yet have common professional courtesy- like answering the phone or returning one’s call?
There have been countless occasions I’ve left a message for someone at a store and much to my avail get no call back, even when they’ve contacted me initially with an “urgent” matter. I can’t tell you how many times a week that I call a store and reception leaves me on hold for 15 minutes, throws me into the call loop and never bothers picking back up to assure I’ve been connected to a live soul (just 5 times today), or the best they have no clue who I am even calling for (I’ve had some check an “employee list” for the GM of a store (Fortune Cookie reads: An unemployment line is in your future).
I get it, I really do, we are all busy and pulled into a million different directions (smoke breaks are very important!) every day. Whether you are in Corporate America, Auto America or any other “America” where you have human interaction, common professional courtesy and communication is essential. If we are lacking these courtesies amongst our peers, just think about how many customers we may lose to Down the Road Motors on any given day due to these behaviors.
Our goal is ultimately the same no matter which side of the business we are in- to build and strengthen relationships as we need them to not only sustain but prosper in the industry we are in. Just be cognizant of your behaviors, each and every one of us, and take that extra 5 minutes at the end of each day to respond to those emails and voicemail messages that have been blinking incessantly since you got in at 8:00 am- especially if it’s one from me (it may a very “urgent” matter).
