New Bike? 4 Strategies To Help Motorcyclists Avoid Crashes

Purchasing a new motorcycle can be a fun and exciting time in your life. However, when you are riding a motorcycle on a regular basis, the risk factor goes way up. Even if you are the most experienced rider on the road, other drivers have a hard time seeing motorcyclists. Here are 4 strategies that can help you avoid crashes on your new bike.

Learn To Control Your New Bike

Every motorcycle you ride is going to handle a bit differently. For example, if you are switching from riding a chopper to suddenly riding a bullet bike, there is going to be a learning curve. If you haven't had a lot of experience riding motorcycles, you need to make sure that you take the proper licensing courses to learn proper motorcycling skills. Before you take your bike out onto the busy roads or freeways, make sure that you have a good understanding of the power and handling of this beautiful bike.

Become More Visible To Drivers

It is important that you do whatever you can in order to make yourself more visible to drivers. In virtually every car accident involving a car and a motorcycle, drivers claimed that they couldn't even see the motorcycle. Using your high-beams can help you during the day or night. Most motorcycles will have pretty dim normal lights. Using your high beams will help you be more visible to the other traffic around you. Wearing brighter color or opting for a more colorful bike can also help you to stand out in a sea of traffic.

Always Obey Speed Limits

When on a motorcycle, it can be tempting to speed quickly past cars while filming it on your GoPro. However, this is one of the easiest ways to raise the chances of getting into an accident. When you are speeding, your reaction time is limited. Even when you are obeying speed limits, you are only left with about 2 seconds to avoid a crash with a car during a bad situation. You don't want to lower your time to react any lower than that.

Be A Defensive Motorcyclist

Keeping your hand on the brake is a great way to make sure you are able to stop before you hit a car or road obstruction. Also, if at all possible, try to never lay down your bike. There have been far too many stories of bikers being launched off of freeway overpasses or off deadly cliffs. Try to keep your bike in control and give all of the other cars around you as much room as possible.

Buying a new bike can be a very exciting experience for any motorcyclist. Learning to avoid accidents before regularly using your new bike will help you be much safer on the road. There are many more resources available online that will help you raise your safety while on your motorcycle. You may also consider having a personal injury lawyer, like the professionals at Clearfield & Kofsky, in the case that you do get in an accident and need help receiving fair compensation. When buying a new bike, make sure that you are taking it easy as well until you fully understand the feel of your new bike.
