We live in an age where information, services, products, and data are at our fingertips. It is expected that there will be 2.16 billion smartphone users by 2016. Many of these users use their devices as a primary internet browser. This means the amount of people using traditional desktop browsers is beginning to diminish and mobile devices are becoming the norm.

What does this mean for the auto industry?

As more and more users move towards mobile devices as their primary browser, it’s important for companies to evolve. This means developing a website that is responsive to new technologies. This doesn’t just mean building a mobile site for users, but creating a captivating site that uses a modern desig. Is your logo outdated? Does your site look the same as it did in 2001? It may be time to look into rebranding your company through a new design scheme.

Along with having a well designed site, it’s important it operates quickly. You may have the most beautifully designed website on the web, however if it’s not loading fast enough, you’re losing revenue. Nearly half of internet users believe sites should load in 2 seconds. If your site is slow, people are not waiting, which means your bounce rate is skyrocketing. Now what does that mean for your site? Here’s a hypothetical; A user searches a term, finds your site in the results, clicks the result, page takes too long to load, user clicks back button. To the search engines this means your page is not relevant to the term used to reach the site. The pending result is your ranking being moved down.

What can I do to stay with the competition?

First make sure your site is mobile friendly. The easiest way to do this is using Google’s mobile friendly test. This is a simple, quick test that will show mobile issues associated with the site. Now completing these fixes are not always quick and easy, yet they must be done to stay relevant with the competition.

As mentioned above, site speed is very important to how a website performs. Google offers a site speed test that shows how a site performs on both mobile and desktop. Similar to the mobile test, the speed test shows where the site passes and where the site needs improvement.

Curious on how your site looks to different users? Not every person uses the same browser or operating system(OS). It’s important to test different browsers to see what someone using Internet Explorer on a desktop compared to someone using an Android phone. It’s not practical to ask everyone you know if you can use their phone or PC to test a website. Browserstack is the perfect tool for this. Plugin which browser and OS you would like to test out and see how it looks.

As technologies and user tendencies change, sites and companies must changes as well. It’s important companies take the steps to stay competitive. The automotive industry is extremely cutthroat and it can be detrimental for a company to fall behind. A solid digital marketing campaign must be created for all automotive businesses, both on the local and global scale.
