I fear the media's perpetual sensationalizing of bad news a hundred times more than I do the swine flu. With just over 1000 people infected out of 6 billion (unmeasurable) this is just another attempt by the merchants of chaos (the media) to further terrify people into spending even more time on their sofas and doing nothing with their lives.

The media thrives on bad news, like a parasite eating away at its organism, sucking the life from entire populations of people. It rotates its coverage from one sensational event to the next until the story wears out and it then moves on to its next fear mongering story or scandal. It moves from terrorism to conspiracy, bank failures to bankruptcy, then exploits unemployment and foreclosures and when all that tires, it moves to the swine flu. The apparent goal is to create as much fear as possible in order to sell their newspapers and advertising. It would appear that the media is committed to doing everything possible to place the entire population into submission and a final "tap-out" by pointing out every problem or threat in society. Interesting that the media's biggest advertisers are the pharmaceutical companies that have a pill for all your fears, phobias and problems. Negativity, bad news and the sensationalizing on problems kill more dreams than all the flu's and wars combined kill people.

This is not just an limited attack on the media but should include anyone fixated on perpetuating bad news and negativity even your family, friends, co-workers,or your boss. I treat this hysteria with the same attention I do the trash-I throw it out for someone to pick up and bring to the garbage dump. I don't know about you but I am sick of hearing about all the problems, mistakes, errors and threats in the world. Now is the time for people to focus on solutions not problems and hope not fear so that the individuals of the world can expand not contract.

You are right on target with your commentary on the media's use of negative news to create sensationalism that attracts consumers... After all, they are in the business of selling impressions, and every time we respond to one of these overblown Dr. Doomsday reports, we are consuming their product as the TV Spot for Tide comes on while we sit transfixed by the monitor. Like yourself, I spend far too much time in airports and on planes... I am amazed how when those airport gate TV monitors announce a breaking news flash about the "Swine Flu Pandemic", everybody stops what they are doing, turns and faces the monitor, then focuses on what the CNN newscaster is saying... Riveted... Transfixed... Mesmerized... Did you know there has never been a better time to take a trip to the Bahamas?

What I want to know is when does a couple hundred people getting what is actually a fairly mild form of the Flu become a "Pandemic"... I mean, let's look at reality. Some guy goes back home to New Zealand from his vacation to Mexico and gets sick for a week, then gets better and that constitutes a Pandemic Plague of Biblical proportions?!?!?!?

Man, I remember coming back from vacations in Mexico with a whole lot worse "Montezuma's Revenge" than some wimpy 5 day flu!!!

Ha! After I read your blog, I came across this headline: (sounds like the real worry is no one cares about this news story!)

* As fear of flu subsides, CDC concerned about complacency

* CDC officials worried H1N1 could return in the fall
