Keep Your Social Media Marketing Fresh With Memes

Trying to attract customers online can be difficult in the best of times. It’s frustrating when you’re trying your best, grinding away on social media, and you end up with only a handful of views. Meanwhile, that picture of a Corgi dressed like a lawyer your girlfriend posted has 100 likes and 50 shares. Don’t feel defeated. When it comes to social media marketing, embrace the memes!

Marketing with memes can be extremely profitable; if you get in on a meme when it’s hot, you’re all but guaranteed a windfall of likes and shares. You have to be careful though. Internet memes go in and out of vogue faster than you can blink. One day planking is all the rage, the next it’s Tebowing, and even putting your cat’s face in a slice of bread was popular for a while there.

If your business hits one of these fads while their fashionable, you’ll instantly gain some cred amongst the young and hip. Hit it a week late, and you’ll still be funny to the mothers of the young and hip. But hit it two weeks late, and even nana thinks you’re trying to hard and moving too slow.

How do you stay on top of what’s relevant and funny? How do you know whats “in” and what’s gone stale? Well, the safest bet is to ask a 14-year-old. Maybe you have a son or a niece or something. If you don’t have access to a 14-year-old, we DON’T recommend you search for one online. That way lies madness (and jail time).

So what DO you do?

Hangout where the memes live. Immerse yourself in the fragrant, cat-filled stew that is internet culture.

The best places to start for the uninitiated are the big two, Facebook and Twitter. You should already have plenty of fans and followers (check our earlier posts if you don’t) so take advantage of those pages. Too often businesses treat social media like they would a TV or print ad, but unlike traditional advertising, social media is a two-way street. Go through the pages of your fans and see what they’re posting about, see what they’re laughing about, and get in on the joke!

As far as internet culture at large goes, there are plenty of places to check out. Our favorites are and For some background into memes check out and the now infamous There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of popular pages dedicated solely to the creation and celebration of memes. Once you find one that seems to resonate with your demographic, hit a site like and produce your own!

And if all else fails, you could do worse than slapping your logo on a LOLcat.

The things we used to recommend... lol. Funny to look back sometimes. For anyone who might stumble on to this now outdated article, don't do any of this!

I've found making custom memes based off of upvoted ones on Reddit is a good call. People are essentially trained to stop and read them, so they're amazing for grabbing attention.

LOL, so true! Just check out r/funny there are some good memes in there and of course there are some you DON'T want to use in there. But Reddit is still one of the best places for content.

Reddit is great but can be a bit much for the uninitiated. Also, it's dangerous because you can lose a whole day of work just browsing.
