@ Jeff - I agree with you about offering any phone app a dealer creates in multiple formats... My favorite way of using a multiple-format approach is how the Kelly Auto Group has done it... If you go to http://www.KellyCarCommunity.com you will see that they prominently feature 3 versions of the Kelly Car Community Phone App... One for iPhone, One for Blackberry and One for Android (Google) platform smart phones. All 3 can be downloaded from their social network, and they were all built by the same developer so they have as much consistency in UI across the 3 Smartphone Op Systems as possible.

I have some mixed feeling about dealers offering any type of Phone App for any one single platform. My concern is potential negative sentiment originating from a perception by consumers that the dealership is endorsing a specific platform, and disparaging the platforms that are not covered. My advice to dealers is to disregard the naysayers that try to convince everyone that nobody wants a dealer created smartphone App. For the last 20 years I have listened and watched these same people say similar things about such new technologies as "websites". The logic provided by these buzz-kills posing as car guys was "Why do dealers want to get their own websites? Nobody wants to visit a dealer website, and besides lack of demand from customers, the factory is already paying to put up a website and your dealership is already represented on the Internet by them..."

You name the innovation, and the same negative pricks always come out of the wood work to tell dealers why they don't need it! Microsites, for example... Ten years ago when I started building Microsites for dealers, there were many of the same people that criticize Snartphone Apps today, saying that microsites were not only useless, but they would offend the Google Gods and the dealer was risking online pariah status and multiple STD's to boot!!!

Smartphone Apps coat less than buying lunch for the sales team on a Saturday, so if you want to try getting one built for your dealership, well... Take Doug Mitchell's advice and "Just Do It... Do something, anything, but the risk of failure from not doing anything is 100%..."

Who knows... Maybe you come up with an idea that is the big hit of the year? But you will never know, nor will your business grow if you listen to the preachers of negativity who seem to flourish within social and professional community sites like this one.

Be brave like bull.... Investing that big fat whopping half of 1% of your monthly advertising budget in the one time cost of building smartphone apps that you will use for well over a year.... Ooooooo you are SO BRAVE!

People that discourage innovation, especially low coat innovation make me want to throw their car keys on the roof!!!

My opinion is that an actual APP is not necessary to bring inventory to your customers' phones and most that I have seen are simply framing in the mobile website. I'm NOT PLUGGING here, but our mobile sites are automatically detected by the , and so you don't need to worry about the OS of the client's phone. Check out www.parkplacetexas.com on your iPhone or Android. The "make an offer" is interesting if it's truly an interactive bid and not just another lead form.

BTW Ralph, your post below is my new all-time favorite. Keep it up!

Thanks for the info Ralph...I was just talking to my dealer about this subject....now I have some info to review....Steve, I don't know you but if getting these type of emails is such an issue, why are you a member of the community? I thought this was a place for ideas and information to be shared.

I like it! Only thing I wish is one is built for the Iphone, they would do the same for the google apps. It seems most of our customer's and staff seem to be mixed between both products. I'm just not sure which one is going to be the clear leader in apps yet. Sorry Apple fans.....no insult intended! :)

Steve - both on here and the Kain group (which you are over) you are coming across in a very negative vein. The latest posting on Vin Solutions in that forum is a good example. I compete against Ralph in many areas but I have never found him to be strictly self promoting in this forum in any way. He does push some of his agendas but he also is careful to give equal time to others as well. You are losing your relevance with your negative postings without trying to be objective.
