Improve the Power of Your Ride with 4r70w transmission

Enjoy a great ride by replacing your existing transmission system with the 4R70W. Read on to find the mechanism and the benefits of making the switch to the 4r70w.

Are you a gear head who’s always tinkering with your ride? Is your ride more than a hobby? Does it spell passion for you? Then, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, you can read on how to add power to your ride with a 4r70w transmission.

What does the name 4R70w signify?

The 4R70W is a four-speed transmission built by Ford Motors in 1993. It’s an automotive overdrive system. The “4” in the name denotes the speeds, “R” the rear wheel drive, “70” refers to the torque and the “W” indicates the Wide gear ratios. It belongs to the same family as the Ford AODE Automatic transmission but with a few significant changes.

Differences between the AODe and the 4R70w

The primary difference between these two transmission systems is that the 4R70W uses a lower first and second gear and has a mechanical diode in place of the roller clutch in the AODE. This makes the transmission system durable and allows for low-speed acceleration.

Popular Models that have an inbuilt 4R70w

The 4R70W was used in Ford models from the time it was introduced in 1993 till nearly a decade after. A wide range of cars had this transmission system including the Town Car, the Crown Victoria, the Thunderbird, the Mustang, the Expedition, the Explorer, the Lincoln Mark VIII, the Mercury Cougar and the pick-up trucks of the F-series like the F150.

The 4R70W is the preferred choice for transmission system for both trucks and cars that will be used Day-in and day-out. Work vehicles that need the maximum power and performance trust this system. This is the reason why several riders switch over to the 4r70w transmission for their vehicles at trusted garages like the Gear Start.

Here are four habits that destroy the life of the 4R70w in your car or truck

If you want to get the maximum from your  four-speed 4r70w automatic transmission system in your vehicle, then ditch these four bad habits that take a toll on the life of the engine.

  • Towing beyond the Recommended Limit

Doing so can lead to plenty of problems. It can cause the clutches and bands to slip, resulting in the failure of the transmission system. Also, it can cause excessive heat generation. This is the biggest contributor to the failure of all automatic transmission systems irrespective of the model or make. A transmission cooler can reduce heat buildup; however, it’s best not to exceed the permissible limits.

  • Going beyond the Maximum Payload capacity

The problems caused by this are the same as the problems mentioned above. So, ensure that you don’t cross the allowed payload capacity as it can cause the transmission to overheat or slip.

  • Forgetting to change the Transmission Fluid regularly

The transmission fluid is prone to get contaminated over time due to wear and tear and exposure to atmospheric elements. Also, countless heating and cooling cycles break it down. The fluid then loses its ability to lubricate the various parts of the transmission, resulting in wear which could lead to eventual failure.

  • Continuously Pressing the Gas Pedal under load

If you have the habit of jack-rabbit starts or flooring the gas pedal during steep inclines, then it can lead to overheating of the transmission system, resulting in failure.

Avoid these mistakes, and you can enjoy the 4r70w transmission in your vehicle for a long time to come.
