How to Use an Air Compressor for Auto Repair

Whether you’ve grown tired of paying thousands each year to have your car repaired, or you’re simply a grease monkey who likes to fix things yourself, an air compressor can make a big difference in the types and size of car repair tasks you’re able to take on. If you’re ready to make the jump and get an air compressor of your own, it’s important to understand just what can and can’t be done once you’re finally the proud owner of an air compressor. Below are just a few of the most popular ways you can use an air compressor to keep those car repair costs way down.

Inflate Your Tires

First, for the most obvious task you can complete with an air compressor: inflating your tires. This might not seem that impressive at first, but when you consider that most service stations now charge for air to fill your tires, even just a few quick top-offs could save you quite a bit of money over time. Add to that the ability an air compressor gives you to effectively repair your own tires by having the capacity to fully inflate them from totally flat, and you’ve pretty much already paid for the cost of the compressor.

Remove Your Tires

If you’re going to repair those tires, you’re probably going to need to remove them as well. A lug wrench provides this ability, which is crucial to so many other car repairs, as well. With the tires off, you can work on the brakes, the shocks and struts, as well as many other engine components that are more-easily accessed with the tires off. An air compressor supply company like Industrial Compressor Supplies can give you tips on the size of compressor and lug wrench that will work most effectively for your specific vehicle(s).

Repair Your Paint

Sure, those small bottles of automotive touch-up paint are nice for tiny scratches and dings, but what about when you have a major body repair that requires a large part of your vehicle to be repainted? With an air compressor, you can avoid the exorbitant costs of body repair shops and complete body repairs yourself, right down to giving your vehicle a shiny new coat of paint. Even for small repairs, the even coverage that a paint sprayer provides offers better protection against rust and chipping than minor touch-ups can provide.

Replace All the Parts

As an avid do-it-yourselfer, you likely know that most parts in your vehicle are installed, in one way or another, using bolts of various sizes. The speed at which you can remove and re-install those bolts will largely dictate the speed at which you can complete the repair project. That’s where the air ratchet comes in. Rather than having to turn the handle on your manual ratchet countless times, you simply squeeze the trigger, and before you know it, that hard-to-reach part will be free from its mounting. You can use an air ratchet with an inline force meter to ensure each bolt is installed with the exact same force, so you won’t ever have to worry about under- or over-tightened bolts again.

Long-Term Investment

Air compressors might be more expensive up front than taking your vehicle to a mechanic. Over time, however, the major savings on labor costs will more than pay for the cost of your air compressor and all the tools you select to use with it. Plus, it will save you a lot of time as you complete repairs to allow you to quickly get back to enjoying all the open road has to offer.
