How to Get the Most Out of Your Dash Camera?

Dash cameras are some of the best car accessories you can have because it will protect you from insurance claims and a wide range of other things. However, for you to reap its benefits, you need to install it correctly and we have some tips for you in that regard. Below are some of the best tips you can get to cover yourself in case of an emergency or an accident happens.

Where should you put your dash camera?

This may sound like an obvious thing to know but you'd be surprised how many people install their dash cameras incorrectly. Dash camera installation is not hard, but without proper positioning, the camera footage will be questionable and almost useless. The camera should be positioned at the center of the windscreen and in a high place. Most people install it behind the rear mirror because this also provides a discrete position.

Aim for the front not the sky

Unless the only reason you are installing your dashboard camera is because you want to record birds, you should definitely not point it towards the sky. Most people install a camera incorrectly and the only thing they get is a sky view, which is really not helpful in most cases.

Always clean your windscreen

Your windscreen stands directly between the camera and what's happening in the outside world. This means that a dirty windscreen will directly affect what the camera captures and it could lower the quality of the video you are taking. This means that you need to maintain your windscreen and keep it clean at all times so your video can have a clear view. You should also ensure that your wipers are clean and they don't create smudges when cleaning the windscreen. You should check your washer bottles on a regular basis to ensure that cleaning solutions are available as well.

Adjust your frame rate and video quality

With any kind of camera, you have the option to change resolutions of the videos you capture. Higher resolutions lead to more detailed and clearer videos and images. Most of the newer dash cameras on the market come with memory cards that are adequate enough to record high resolution videos. You should know that high-resolution videos take up a lot of space so the videos could be shorter depending on the memory you have.

Reduce the length of your files

Dash cameras usually capture videos in time blocks which could differ from 3 to 10 minutes or more. The quality of your videos will not be affected by the time limit but you should know that small files may be easier to work with because they are quick to transfer from a memory card. A short time length is also possible for Wi-Fi-enabled camera because it will be easy to store them directly to your mobile device.

Have a good memory card

Most dash cameras usually have a 1080 resolution and could support up to 32GB of memory. However, 64GB  is recommended and you should try to at least have a class 6 card. Any cards lower than that may affect the quality of the videos you get. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s website for your camera to see whether it has a memory limit.

Test your camera

Don't assume that your camera is working once you install it. You need to keep checking on it and test it to see if it’s actually working and whether anything has malfunctioned. Try to remove your memory card even if it’s just one time a month in order to check the quality and consistency of the video footage.
