How to Choose the Best Van Hire Company

There’s a lot of different vehicle hire companies out there, all vying for your attention when you’re looking to hire a van. Sometimes that can be a good thing, but for the most part, it’s kind of overwhelming. You never know if you’re truly getting the best deal, or hiring the perfect van for your needs.

First off, you need to size up the job you’re doing properly. That means looking at exactly what you’re going to be needing to shift and move around. Are the things bulky, or long? Are they overly heavy? Will they need any kind of lifting equipment, like a pneumatic lift on a Luton? Once you know exactly what your job’s specifications are, you can begin sizing up which van you’re going to be needing.

Then you need to pick the right company, which is a case of prioritising really. You need a local company, who offer great prices and deals and really know their stuff. They need to have a solid reputation too. All that can quickly seem like a tall order, but you can skimp on elements if the price is right elsewhere. It’s just a case of striking the right balance for you and your job.

Which Van?

When it comes to choosing the ideal van hire company for your self-drive van hire needs, before anything else, you need to decide what you need from your van. There are tons of different models and options out there, so make sure you know what you need before you go out to hire your van. Choosing the right van is a hassle all on its own.

A simple short standard panel is fine if you’re just hauling a few smaller items, or a lot of smaller items. This is perfect for a small one bedroom home moving, or if you’re just doing light DIY or construction, and need to shift tools or materials, but nothing too big or long.

If you need to shift bigger things, you’re in need of a Luton van. Luton vans are the ones you see with the box that overhangs the cab. They have as much space as you can legally drive around on a UK license in the back, coming in at under 3.5 tonnes. If you need to move massive things, or you’re moving a three bedroom plus home, this is the van for you.

If security and weather aren’t too much of a concern, a flatbed or pickup van could be just the ticket. These are ideal for carrying bigger or longer loads too, and as a bonus, tend to come in cheaper than the other options, due to less demand generally.

Apart from the different types of vans, you’ve got loads of variations, such as radio, Bluetooth connectivity, fuel economy, air conditioned storage. There’s a lot to think about when you’re choosing the right van for your needs, so make sure you know what the job requires.

Fuel economy is an especially big point, because if you’re going to be covering a lot of ground in your van, and you’ve gone for a big Luton van, full loaded with stuff, an older model could have a terrible miles per gallon. You need to know which models are the most fuel efficient. That means you’ve got to tack on a potentially large additional cost.

The Right Van

Most importantly, do they have it? Now you’ve spent some time coming to the conclusion about what type and model of van your job demands, you need to find the van hire company that can actually provide one. Make enquiries, and make sure your company of choice can actually provide the vehicle which you need.

The Right Price

This is all totally academic if the rental price is way too high. If you can’t afford to hire the vehicle, you’ve gone with the wrong company! There are plenty of different van hire companies out there, all competing to give the very best prices possible, so make sure you’re going to the guys that give the perfect balance of the right van, quality service and a great price.

The Right Area

Sure, if you see a great deal or option that’s only slightly out of the way, drive a little further for it, but for the most part, you want to choose the best local van hire company. No one wants to faff around driving extra distance when it comes to hiring and returning the van, and it’s just more fuel costs you’re going to have to cover. Make sure you pick a nearby company.

Experience and Reputation

Who wants to deal with an inexperienced company with a bad reputation? Nobody! That’s why you need to find a company with plenty of experience, who know exactly what they’re doing, and who have a great reputation from doing it right.

The best way to find these kinds of things out is to ask around. Word of mouth is always going to be the best kind of endorsement. If you know anyone else who’s hired a van recently, be sure to ask them what they thought of their company and whether they’d go there again.

If you don’t know anyone who’s hired a van recently, then you need to get online. Doing some research online, reading a range of reviews, making sure they’re as unbiased as possible is always going to be a solid way of getting a feel for a company. You don’t want to be hiring a vehicle from a company you can’t trust, right?

Finding the kind of flexible, accommodating company that can cover all your van hire needs, and find a plan or deal that best suits you is crucial too. Different companies offer loads of different deals and options, so be sure to shop around and get plenty of quotes. You want to be sure you’re going with the cheapest and best option available.

That doesn’t have to be all that difficult either, especially not when it’s so easy to get quick online quotes nowadays. Make sure you do some comparisons!
