I did not know what my life coach and trainer Rick Ivone had in store for me today. He met me with a smile and told me that I would be shown the difference between "good" and "great".

I was not sure what he had in mind but I did know that Rick hates the word "good". Words do have power and what I have learned over the past year is that the words we use impact our mindset, energy and trajectory in life.

Before I continue with my morning experience, let me give you some background information. In December 2009, I made a commitment to improve my physical health. Since starting PCG Digital Marketing in 2005, much of my day was behind a computer.

When I started my business, there were countless 18+ hour days behind my computer screen. I justified my lack of exercise by telling myself that I was building a business and that every moment I could work would make the business grow.

As I look back at how I was living I have the perspective of just how wrong that business plan was for my life. As a result of not moving my body, each year I gained a few pounds. It happened slowly.

I remember one day I did not like what I saw in the mirror as I got dressed in the morning. I had enough.

Food Allergy Blood Test

I started my journey to greatness by going to a Preventive Medicine specialist, Dr. Neal Rosen in Middletown, NJ who recommended that I take a food allergy test. As I look back, this blood test was a critical component of my successful change in lifestyle over the last 18 months.

What I found out was eye opening. The foods that I was eating on a regular basis were actually irritating my immune system and were throwing off my body's energy and normal functions. I was irritating my digestive tract each day with "healthy" foods. I was never much of a snacker or junk eater.

For the past 40+ years my daily breakfast often included dairy and eggs. These two food groups were "off the chart" on my allergic response. When I eliminated the foods that my body did not process properly, as indicated by the food allergy test, and combined a fitness program, I lost 35 pounds over a 12 month period. I have been able to keep this weight off since hitting my comfort range for over 6 months.

My life prior to investing in my health was a "good" life where today my life is truly "great". I have more energy, more clarity and actually more time for work and play. If you are thinking that you don't have "time" to implement an exercise program or you don't have time to eat properly, let me just say that this could be the biggest lie in your life. Living "good" is denying you the experience of "great".

When you have the right balance in life, your ability to connect with life is amplified. Opportunities come in abundance and you have the energy to embrace those opportunities. How about you? Are you living a "good" life or a great life?

Do you even have a reference point to know the difference?

The Weighted Vest

This brings me to this morning when Rick had me wear a 25 lb weighted vest for my one hour workout. It was not the 35 pounds that I lost but it was close and boy did that vest make a difference in how I felt.

Wearing the vest was an eye opening experience as I moved through my warmup and then on to my TRX training. The kicker at the end of my session was an uphill sprint in the street.

Rick timed me with the vest and then he took off the vest to see the difference in performance. With the 25 lb vest on, my sprint was 13 second. Then Rick told me to repeat the sprint without the vest. What a difference! I was able to cut 25% off my time!

He wanted to create a reference point on how much my body has changed and how much greater my life was by investing in my health. My life has been transformed and I have more energy to pursue my dreams.

Today made me think of how many people have bought into the lie that they don't need to invest in their health and that things are "good".

Once you experience "Great" you will understand why: Good is The Killer of Great.

If you never have experienced "Great" then you will have to trust me that it's worth the investment. Your investment will be repaid with more time, more energy, more clarity and more happiness. How does that sound as a plan for your life?
