Garage Clean Up—What to Keep and What to Toss

Perhaps you’ve noticed that your garage is getting a little too cluttered. If you want to free up some space to store extra tools, machinery, and equipment, you’ll need to clear out some of the miscellaneous items that you’ve been hanging onto for too long.

Whether you choose to sell them, donate them, recycle them, or throw them away, you’ll have to make some hard decisions about what you can bear to part with and what you want to keep. Here are some tips for making these difficult choices and freeing up your much-needed garage space.

Figure Out if an Item is Still Useful

Some of the things you have lying around your garage probably haven’t been used for years. Whether it’s tools that have become obsolete, left-over materials from a job you’ve already completed or decorative items that have gone out of style, you need to make decisions about what you want to keep and what you can bear to part with. You can donate these items or sell them, or even trash them if they’re in bad condition, but you’ll want to clear this clutter out of your garage.

Figure Out if You Have Duplicates

Some items in your garage may still be useful, but you might not need as many of them as you currently own. If your assortment of tools and equipment have exceeded your available space, you can weed through your belongings and only keep the items that are most valuable to you. Or perhaps you misplaced one of your tools and found it again only after replacing it. Though having a spare might be fine, at some point you can have so many duplicate items lying around that you don’t have room for storing the items you need. If you find this to be true, get rid of some of those duplicates.

Store the Items You Plan to Keep More Efficiently

You may have more room in your garage than you realize. Part of your solution many need to be installing an organizational system. Invest in some heavy duty storage cabinets, stackable storage bins, or other smart organizing solutions. These are great for storing tools, equipment, materials or anything else you may find lying around your garage. Once these items are given a designated place, you’ll be amazed at the amount of extra space you have available.

When in Doubt, Put an Item on Trial

You may have some items that you don’t use very often but you’re not sure you can part with them yet. In such cases, you can put these items on a sort of trial. Designate a bin or two for these questionable items. Label them with a date. If you still haven’t used them by the date written on the bin, get rid of them.

Take the time to go through your garage periodically to make sure it’s as neat and orderly as possible. Though it may seem like a monumental task, decluttering and organizing your garage can create peace of mind. It can also free up additional space for the items you use on a regular basis.
