From the Trenches - Should I Speak at AutoCon2012?

I am a firm believer that AutoCon2012 will be the biggest event of this year, eclipsing all others including the DigitalDealer Conference.  So when I received a request to submit a Speaker's submission, I was humbled and honored at the same time.  My first thought was, "What would I talk about?"

I am an Internet Sales & Marketing Manager for a very real and successful dealer.  My next thought was to wonder how my dealer would feel about it.  When I approached him, with trepidation, he approved immediately.  That left me no "out".

So I wrote the following as my submission:

Hmmm... If I am to speak at AutoCom2012, I would like to speak "From the Trenches".  I would like to talk to everyday Internet Managers and BDC Managers about their road to success.  I don't believe in Silver Bullets and superstardom. I have no agenda other than that.

  • I would talk about coming into this job at a time when the average jobspan for an Internet Manager was 3 months and turning it into 12 successful years at one dealer.
  • I would like to talk about dealing with a sometimes hostile or indifferent environment and molding it into a Digital Dealer.  Dealership politics.
  • I would discuss striving for success and prioritizing a limited budget in a single rooftop.
  • I will discuss what to do when you're outgunned by a larger deep-pocket or unethical competitor.
  • I would talk about doing it alone versus outsourcing when the budget doesn't allow.
  • I'll talk about creativity versus "best-practices".  Should you really ask, "Who else is doing this and having success?  I hope not!"
  • I'll talk about the revolution of the Internet evolving into the revolution of Social Media, Reputation Management and great customer service.

And finally, I want to stress the importance of loving what you do and taking pride in it.  Put things into perspective.  (When I used to read about superstar Internet Managers selling 800 cars a month, it used to depress me until I divided their number of dealerships by cars sold and found they were no better than me).

Ralph Paglia and Jim Zeigler have both won the Passion Award.  I want to be next.  That's my agenda.

If you and our fellow ADM readers think that's worthy, we're on!

Tom I love the honest straight forward approach.

Talk from your heart and I am sure many other heads will be nodding with not only approval but understanding. Can't wait to see it.

I am so looking forward to hearing your presentation.  Would you be able to create a video speaking about this very post and what you plan to cover in your workshop.  Address it to the thousands of Internet Mangers who are looking for advice and inspiration.  This way the AutoCon team can use it to entice your peers to come and collaborate with you not only in the workshop but during the 3 day conference.

Actually Ralph reminded me I only have 60 minutes.  I'm going to have to talk fast. ;-) Thanks for your support.
