From the Trenches - Are you ready for a-Commerce and v-Commerce?

You believe you finally have this e-Commerce thing down pat and you're getting serious about this m-Commerce thing (mobile) because you heard Google is going to start penalizing those sites that are not mobile optimized.  Let me introduce to you:

 

a-Commerce - Augmented Reality

v-Commerce - Virtual Reality

 

As I was sitting in the restaurant at lunch time and browsing new cars, a "suggestion" popped up in the corner of my eye for the exact car I was interested in. I nodded and a young woman appeared in my glasses in front of my right eye, smiling and appealing.  "Hi Jim, I'm Monica", I heard in my earpiece, "It's a wonderful day at Smith Auto and I see you've been viewing our 2018 Flame IE.  Can I answer any questions about this car or assist you in any other way?"

"I would like a test drive", I replied.  "Oh good, I can help you with that", said Monica.  "Do you prefer a virtual test drive or would you like to come in and drive the car yourself?"

"I would like a virtual test drive", I said.  "Excellent!" replied Monica. "Would you like the link now or sent to your email to use later with immersive tech?"  "I prefer immersive tech, thank you", I said.

"Certainly Jim, I have your email address as Jim@ar.com.  Is that correct?"  "Yes", I replied.  "And Jim, is this number the best number to reach you at....."

"And remember Jim", she continued, "You are already pre-approved for this purchase, if at any time during your test driving experience, you decide you would like to purchase this vehicle, simply say "BUY" and we will text you the paperwork for your signature and deliver the car to your door at the date and time of your choosing."

 

On July 29th 2012 I wrote, "The Next Big Thing - No It's Not Mobile".  Back in February 2013, I spoke about what was coming with the "Always On" generation.  I am being proven correct once again.

 

Sometimes opportunities come in abundance.  And then again sometimes they come

Once in a Lifetime...

And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may ask yourself
Well...how did I get here? (Talking Heads)

 

And you may ask yourself how this applies to you and selling cars today. 

Facebook, Google and Apple are investing, not millions, but billions into AR and VR as I write this article.  Google has had its ups and downs with Google Glass, but is now investing heavily in the iWatch.  Facebook recently invested $2 Billion in a VR company.  Microsoft is also heavily invested in these technological leaps forward.  What do they know that we don't know?

 

"VR and AR headsets both provide stereo 3D high-definition video and audio, but there’s a big difference. VR is closed and fully immersive, while AR is open and partly immersive – you can see through and around it. Where VR puts users inside virtual worlds, immersing them, AR puts virtual things into users’ real worlds, augmenting them.

You might think this distinction is splitting hairs, but that difference could give AR the edge over not just VR, but the entire smartphone and tablet market. What are the implications for digital marketing and sales?

 

As the scenario I presented at the beginning of this post suggests, it will fundamentally alter the way we approach the sale of automobiles.  Do we currently have the technological capability to sell cars online?  Absolutely!

 

With well-funded major auto groups buying up smaller stores and the entrance of outside investors such as Warren Buffet into the industry, money is no obstacle.  Innovation and creativity will be the name of the game.

 

Dealers, what do you think and where will you be just a few years from now?

 

Marketers and Consultants, what do you think and where will you be just a few years from now?

 

How will this be utilized by Facebook and other Social Media sites?

 

What effect will this have on pricing, customer service, and reputation management?

LOL, thank you Tim!  It may be scary for most dealers AND marketers but others will see amazing opportunities.  And yes, it is truly coming... change waits for no one.   Personally, I can't wait!

This is a scary thought and probably too big for most dealers to want to even think about getting their head around when the end of the month is still the primary day-to-day focus of most operators.
