Five Cheap Ways to Get Around Without Driving

The car-centric society in which we live has restricted many people to driving as the only way of getting around. However, gas prices, and the costs of maintaining your own car are increasingly rising, making it expensive to run a personal car. The cost of driving around can also be defined in terms of the impact it has on the environment. The good news is, there are a number of affordable alternatives to driving. Here are some options you may want to consider to save money, time, and lots of maintenance.

Cycling

Depending on the distance you intend to cover and your destination, cycling is a cheaper alternative that will also help you to remain physically fit. Both the initial purchase price and maintenance costs of bikes are quite affordable. Today, modern bikes feature functional baskets that allow you to carry your belongings conveniently.

Walking

Walking not only offers you a great alternative to driving, but also gives you an opportunity to explore your surroundings as well as the culture. Though you may have to make more trips to the shoe store, walking is arguably the best and easiest way to get around without driving. For short trips, you should consider walking with family and friends since trekking is a remarkable way to unwind and exercise.

Public Transport

Public transport is one of the most affordable and accessible ways to get around any big city. With options ranging from buses to light rail, you can cover considerable distances when you choose to use public transport. These means are not only cheaper than driving, but also allow you to work on your laptop or mobile phone while travelling. You can also combine this option with walking and cycling. Making your route varied, and cheaper no matter the distance.

Carpooling

Today, technology has brought about taxi hailing apps that make it possible for people going in the same direction to use a single car. When friends or family members carpool, they are able to save money that would have spent on gas. It is also a convenient option that helps you to better plan for your trips. If you drive others regularly as part of a carpool, a lawyer recommends you keep your car up to date and well-maintained.

Lifts

You can choose to get lifts from friends and family once in a while. Depending on the circumstances, you may want to offer something in return. There are even apps available that make ride-sharing or paying for rides possible.

Regardless of how you choose to get around, it is important to stay safe on the road. Always keep your belongings close and your travel cards or money out of sight.
